An unclassified embassy cable dated February 27, 2006, and launched Tuesday by WikiLeaks, said a fundamentalist presence" was focused in the northern town of Iquique, and to a smaller degree in Santiago. "These fundamentalists who are known to be connected with Hizbullah are growing their presence and action in Chile," the cable said, introducing the intelligence in it was inadequate to evaluate their true motives. "There is considerable data that suggests that substantial economic fund-raising for Hizbullah is happening in northern Chile within the Muslim community," it said. However, the wire continued to express that number hostile action have been discovered coming from both the Islamic Center in Santiago, or from a Sunni mosque. "The Hizbullah organizations in the upper section of Chile are thought to be economic cells," it said.
