No charges in destruction of CIA interrogation tapes

No one will face criminal charges for destroying CIA videotapes that depicted interrogation of terrorism detainees during President George W. Bush's administration, NPR has learned.

Two sources close to the investigation say a federal prosecutor has concluded there isn't enough evidence to bring an indictment. The statute of limitations on criminal law covering the tapes' November 2005 destruction expired this week, making future prosecution impossible.

No Charges To Be Filed For Destruction Of CIA Interrogation Tapes : NPR Not quite sure how to feel about this. Given that the statute of limitations has run, I guess it doesn't really matter at this point.

Former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey named a special prosecutor, John Durham, to investigate the destruction of the videos after it came to light in early 2008. This outcome was a foregone conclusion the day charles schumer betrayed his constituents by confirming mukasey as attorney general. Mukasey had ruled while a judge that US citizens can be locked up without charge indefinitely - obviously nobody even vaguely attached to "national security" was gong to face any consequences for illegal acts while he was in charge of selecting prosecutors.

Well, if you don't care about knowing the truth, then I suppose not. I would have liked to know the details of how US tax dollars are being spent, particularly if they were/are being spent to commit great evils.

Obama has bent over backwards to cover up and protect the bush admin's torture policies, so its not like the Justice Department was going to pursue this anyway.

Very true. Just about the only thing politicians of both parties can agree on.

Why would you want to thank people who in the name of freedom and democracy shit all over these ideals?

The true test of someone’s allegiance to freedom is how they uphold the ideals when these ideals are inconvenient.

Because freedom and democracy do not exist on a battlefield.

When politicians redefine "battlefield" to include the entire planet and redefine "national security" to include every conceivable executive branch crime and redefine "enemy" to include every living human (including US citizens), then freedom and democracy no longer exist anywhere.
