People, people, people.

What are you thinking?

I, President smurf, have decided (after great investigation, of course) that all of the liberals on this board are terrorists who are plotting a 911 style attack, only with VW hippie vans instead of jets. Because of this, I have issued an order for the CIA to off the lot of you at their convenience. Have a good day.

Huh.

I don't have a problem with that, either...

Welcome to the party. This "government can use these over reaching powers in malicious ways against undeserving American citizens" thing has been a concern for quite awhile now.

Here's how it works: when a politician one likes does it, it's because they're doing it for the betterment of our country and our country's security. When a politician one doesn't like does it, they're crossing a line and there's a chance they'll abuse it to target political dissidents.

Well, let's try a different angle then.

President goober has decided (after great investigation, of course) that all of the non-liberals on this board are terrorists who are plotting a 911 style attack, only with large SUVs instead of jets. Because of this, he has issued an order for the CIA to off the lot of us at their convenience. Have a good day.

Still good with that?

Or, President Pram has decided that ex-Navy folks are threats to national security, and has authorized the CIA to eradicate all of them lest they compromise our sea-based security even further.

Thanks for the welcome, but I've been at that particular party for quite awhile, now. Just in case that I haven't voiced it anywhere before on the forum, the patriot act is bullshit, too.

And when one complains regardless of which party does it, they must be a libertarian.

That certainly does make your complaints more credible, in my opinion.

And when one complains regardless of which party does it, they must be a libertarian. Appears we're on the same page, then!

I'm opposed, but whether or not it's an American citizen doesn't make that much of a difference to me.
I like you. I disagree. But I like you.

It's a well known fact that they drove their caravan of hippie vans to Iraq to make off with Saddam's WMDs right before we invaded.

I'd say you renounce your citizenship when you plan to destroy your country of origin.

I'm pretty ambivalent about this one. If they assassinate him, he's dead. If they arrest him, try him, deal with years of appeals, and then carry out the death sentence, then he's dead.

Maybe for american citizens accused by the state of treason they should allow trials in absentia?

Here's the deal. This guy Anwar Al Awlaki, was born in New Mexico and is an American citizen..He has in recent years, been a radical cleric.....however he is known to have been participating in terror attacks.

U.S. Approves Targeted Killing of American Cleric

Bush created kind of a terrorist hit-list, if you will, during his administration that authorizes the CIA to effectively assassinate anyone on it. To this point, all the subjects on the list have been non-Americans, but the Obama administration recently added this Al Awlaki guy who is an American citizen.

What do you think of this?
Interesting............You seem to have no problem in your war against terrorism sending troops to other countries to KILL those you suspect/accuse of terrorism but have a problem if they are your own home ground terrorist.

Isnt that a bit hypocritical?

Are you saying only American Terrorist have a right to be trialed in a court and others are not?

LBS didn't actually give his opinion on either subject. Most of the other members here have views on whether or not it's okay for America to assassinate terrorists (I'm personally for. I'm alright with killing a soldier who's defending his country honorably so I'm damn sure not going to have a problem with putting some scumbag down.) but are unconcerned with whether or not such terrorists are American citizens.

Thanks for your input.....Im well aware that LBS gave no opinion of his own which I find strange.

I quoted his post only because it was easier to do it that way that point out all the others that do have a problem with it and remain addressing the topic.

I'm glad that this administration is a lot tougher on crime than the previous administration.

Who else has mentioned having a problem with it? I don't remember every post in the thread and don't feel like rereading it, but it seems everyone who has a problem with this man being on the list has that problem because they don't think such a list should exist.

What I have a problem with is the govs reasoning for publicizing this sort of thing. In the real World, logically, if you want to kill someone, you don't call them up and tell them "you best watch your back cause I'm gunna' kill you" nor do you alert the media as to your plans. Yet for some reason our government allows news stories to be published that tells the World of their plans. It does not make any sense. Unless, their motivation isn't so much to kill the guy. Because I imagine once the target finds out he is on a hit list (especially a U.S. government hit list) chances are he is going to go underground and make it much harder to find him. Do you see my point? I just don't see the logic in making stuff like this public.

President Goober would not issue such an order. Because President Goober understands that there are constitutional rights on this side of the border, and they pretty much follow the flag on the other side.

So if this Al Awlaki guy finds himself in US custody, he gets a full helping of constitutional rights, if he's in the bunker with the AQ guys, he's a target, until he runs out with his hands in the air.
