BarryG it would be one thing if the government were using our tax dollars for R&D. Instead it is going to the military, entitlement programs, and debt service. I am a big supporter of the military and it provides a lot of value per dollar invested, but it is still overfunded. I am not a big supporter of entitlements or debt service...neither provide much value and both are most certainly overfunded.
Hey I agree. The govt does still fund a lot of fundamental research at universities, much of stuff the private sector would never do even though it benefits them in the long run.

Look at the who,e quote. The "you didn't build that" refers to the infrastructure that businesses need to succeed:

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.* There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.* Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.* Somebody invested in roads and bridges.* If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.* Somebody else made that happen.* The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.* Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.* There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own.* I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service.* That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.*"
+1. Wonderfully put.

More of the Elizabeth Warren logic.

the internet was called DARPA back in the day and it for government/instituional research only.
Not many people had access to it until the early 90's. It was planned properly but not for the massive flood of
internet traffic we have today.

There's some great stuff in that article. This is probably my favorite:

And the private sector created the phone system that made the Internet happen. Putz.

And "The Internet" is one of the most poorly designed and implemented projects I have ever seen. Sure, packet switching is nice but other than that it's a minefield. Al Gore can have credit for creating it. It's a mess.

Be careful if you read the entire thing. It's just socialist BS.

Its more of the same old class warfare that he in pushing on us. Remember, Obama is a big fan of sol Alinkski who wrote "rules for radicals".
Sol believed in divide and conquer strategies to achieve goals. This is what Obama is doing. He is dividing this nation, rich versus poor, in order to achieve his goals.
Anyone who believes Obama is pro-free market has to be an idiot.

oh I can hear the "you're a racist" rants being thrown at me already.

Remarks by the President at a Campaign Event in Roanoke, Virginia | The White House

I would like to know who built my business besides myself?

Who is that somebody else?

Letting the Bush tax cuts expire on those making over $250k per year is hardly a "soul sucking" tax. And asking congress to put together long term transportation funding is not too much to ask I don't think.
letting the Bush tax cuts expire is a "feel good" initiative from the liberals. Actually its more of the same class warfare crap that will succeed in nothing. Letting them expire will not put a dent in the deficit.

the internet was never called DARPA. DARPA is the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency. It was created in 1958 in response to the Russians launching Sputnik.

As I said, eat a Big Mac every day because you need cholesterol to live.

So assuming that we all agree that one of the primary reason's government exists is to encourage economic activity (i.e. business), shouldn't we complain when the burden of government becomes counter-productive towards that end? In other words, anarchy isn't good for business. But government in its current size retards economic growth as well. So it does stuff we should support plus thousands of other things that aren't helpful.

And this video references the Rahn Curve, which tries to describe the optimum level of government spending for economic growth: The Rahn Curve and the Growth-Maximizing Level of Government - YouTube

Doesn't the "that" in the quote refer to roads, power grids, infrastructure type stuff?

Not entirely sure what the hubbub is about here.

Hopefully someone can post some pictures....

Disconnected????

The conclusion to all this is the scary, regardless of how you interpret the quote itself. Whether it's "your business doesn't really belong to you" or "your business exists because other people and services helped you get there," his end desired result is still collectivist BS.

I know exactly what he meant but it doesn't really matter how he meant it as we all know what he was getting at. His fatal flaw is making federal policy decisions based on collectivist ideals where private business can only thrive with the heavy hand of government guiding it. That's the scary part, not some quote.

If you do not get it you are the who is disconnected from your own life.

Capisce Paisan?

"your business doesn't really belong to you"
Not what that quote meant, and I'm fairly certain you know it. Come on Nick, that's FKD level stuff right there.

or "your business exists because other people and services helped you get there," his end desired result is still collectivist BS.
This is closer to (I believe) the intended meaning. Although I don't think it was meant with the negative subtext that you are (intentionally or not) reading into it. Look, I get that you are very much a Libertarian wrt this stuff but I really think all he was saying was that the American system (and to a certain extent, it's citizenry) that assisted private business men and women, and that is a good thing! But because they were assisted by the collective (scare quotes incoming?) it is not all too much to ask that they pay slightly more when it comes to taxes. Did you even read the whole speech, or just the scaaaaaary part that people have been c&p-ing on the internet (and putting into clever pictures!)

I’ve got a different idea. I do believe we can cut -- we’ve already made a trillion dollars’ worth of cuts. We can make some more cuts in programs that don’t work, and make government work more efficiently. (Applause.) Not every government program works the way it’s supposed to. And frankly, government can’t solve every problem. If somebody doesn’t want to be helped, government can’t always help them. Parents -- we can put more money into schools, but if your kids don’t want to learn it’s hard to teach them. (Applause.)
