Default Some upset at New York sex education
http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/25/us/new...html?hpt=hp_t2

A new sexual education curriculum provided by the New York City Department of Education is raising eyebrows among some parents concerned with the program's level of detail and overall message.

One group, The NYC Parents' Choice Coalition, has been particularly outspoken against the new curriculum and held a press conference Monday to voice their concerns.

"I know that as my grandchildren, I want them to be able to know that abstinence is an option," Sylvia Laughlin, a group member, said at the press conference. "It's something they have a right to choose."

However, the Department of Education insists that while the program would begin sexual education classes in middle school and provide far more in-depth instruction regarding safe-sex practices, abstinence would continue to be taught.

The more you tell teenagers not to do something, the more they'll want to do it. Obviously teenagers are having sex so you can't just teach abstinence especially if they already have done it. Their parents or guardians need to be the ones teaching their kids about safe sex practices; schools really shouldn't be the ones teaching kids that or telling them about it.

You have to teach abstinence!!!!

We do. Its clearly defined as part of the curriculum.

.... You're not teaching it right!!!! You have to tell kids they are dirty and should be ashamed of their bodies and homosexuality is a sin blah blah blah blah

Morons.

Kids are going to have sex no matter what. Teach them safe sex so they don't get a disease or pregnant.

How hard is that?

Sums it up pretty well. If they want their kids taught a certain way, why don't they teach the kids themselves?

I do wonder what is inclusive of more in-depth, "videos, live shows", how in-depth do middle schoolers need to be? The in-depthness would make me want to have sex. They should just make sex gross and show the side effects of the diseases of sex, scare the crap out of them kids..put sex fear in them. Parents can step up and take care of the rest.

now, that actually makes sense. they show all these gross pics of smokers. but how to use a condom for sex? get really gross, the kids will love it, and that means they'll pay attention.

Yeah but people still smoke even after seeing what can happen to you after years of smoking. Plus I know they show what can happen to you if you get an STD and people are grossed out - but they still have unprotected sex.

They might watch it but that doesn't mean they're paying attention. That's like saying whenever we get shown videos for training in the Army all the soldiers are paying attention. They might be looking at it, but they are in another world at that moment.

Sex ed has to start at home with the parents. If you as a parent don't talk to your kids then they are going to listen to whoever does tell them - and that's usually the wrong person. Or take them to Planned Parenthood or a place to get information if you're not comfortable. Or take them to the doctor.

I don't think my dad really had the sex talk with me - I don't know about my brothers. But I pretty much figured it out and the only time my dad talked to me about sex was when I in a round about way said I wasn't a virgin anymore (when I was 20 - yeah that's right) and he just said "Well it only takes one time to get pregnant. We found that out with your little brother." I was like "eww gross. I don't need to know that." lol. When I was in 5th/6th grade they gave us the talk where they split the boys and girls up but it was talking about how our bodies were changing. The girls got the talk about our period and when you might get it and then we got the free pads and tampons. Then the guys saw us when we came out of the room and were like "You guys got free stuff?" That's usually the mindset of 11-12 y/o kids.

My daughter (who just turned 6) already knows what sex is and she can explain how to have sex. She also knows that is how you make babies. Best part is that my wife and I didnt teach her it until she could more/less explain the process. Our favorite part was where she was explaining that she needed 50 others girls so they could all make babies. I asked her how many guys she would need and she said just one. We dont let her watch TV all that much outside of netflix. That is what she was able to put together from school.

BTW we are in NY so its not like the information doesnt spread on how to have sex but the focus does need to be safe sex and add that the only way to be 100% safe is abstinance.

Yeah I wouldnt trust parents to step up and teach that. In most cases those parents that do teach it are already late.

I wonder where she got that she needed 50 other girls lol. It sounds like they incorporate abstinence but these parents in this group find that's not good enough. Of course the only 100% safe sex is not having it - I don't know why people don't understand that.

You would think that would turn people off but some people --- they'll have sex with anything.

Being a Corpsman of Marines I have a library dedicated to some of the nastiest pictures of STDs this side of 4Chan. I get where you're going with the gross out pics. But I really don't think a child's first glimps at genatalia that aren't their own should be so traumatic. Do we really need to terrorize our kids into abstanance and possibly a mental dissorder?

Middle school kids shouldn't get the pictures - they should get the "your bodies are changing talk" and then explain that with hormones might come sex but I agree they shouldn't get the pictures. Teenagers - they need to see what can happen when you slut around. OR if the first time you have sex is with someone who sluts around - male or female (there are plenty of male sluts out there).

I'm sure there is a very easy and non-traumatic way to teach sex education.

no. but face it, with some kids only shock and horror will work. like the girls that think it's cool to sleep around.
and the conversation isn't pleasent, etc. i remember asking my step mother, and she wouldn't give me an answer. and she was a nurse. when i was getting ready to start my cycle, she was again worthless. and it shouldn't be that way.

Of course it's not pleasant and yes a few kids will see those pictures and wrap it up but some think "Oh that won't happen to me." And yes there are the girls - and guys - who think it's cool to sleep around. I think I've met more slutty guys than girls in my life honestly. Oh but guys get to be called "players" when they slut around.

Yeah after we had the class about our cycles, etc, I had to leave my mom a note and ask her about it because I never saw her. She answered it at least. Unfortunately not all children get to have someone to explain to them things like sex, body changes, etc. My dad tried to be there for me but it is kind of awkward asking your dad about female stuff.

The people who think it's cool to sleep around, they just have issues usually. Sometimes I"ve thought about why not just sleep with random guys all the time...but then I realize I actually have some self-respect. Most slutty girls have 'daddy' issues, slutty guys...I don't know they got hurt by someone seems to be the case. Then there are some people who are just raging nymphomaniacs.

I was a slutty guy but not till my early 20's. I never went "all the way" with anyone till I was 21. I can't speak for all guy-sluts but for me it was making up for lost time. Being a military brat kind of messed up my self image and I never took advantage of the fact that if I broke out of my parent's conservative style other people might have noticed me more and I wouldn't have been such a wallflower throughout high school.

I don't really find anything wrong with older teens exploring their sexuality. I think Holier than Thou curriculums about sex screw kids up more than fumbling around in the back of your mom's van. If people spent less time making sex taboo and more time explaining to kids that condoms don't make the baby Jesus cry, kids would be safer and more responsible.
