WASHINGTON -- The U.S. government has warned domestic and international airlines that some terrorists are considering surgically implanting explosives into humans to carry out attacks, The Associated Press has learned.

There is no intelligence pointing to a specific plot, but the U.S. shared its concerns last week with executives at domestic and international carriers.

People traveling to the U.S. from overseas may experience additional screening at airports because of the threat, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

So there is no intelligence of a specific plot stating that this is possible but more of a "just in case?" Do they realize the planning it would take to implant someone with a bomb? I don't think that any of the terrorist groups have the funding, the knowledge or the wherewithal to pull this off. It's quite possible that the person could detonate before they even got to the airport.

I guess if we see a lot of reports of people being blown up then we have our "intel" to support it.

How would such a plan even make sense? I'm not an explosives expert, but I doubt you could put a particularly large bomb inside a (living) human body, anally, surgically, or swallowed.

They'd be better just showing up to the lines outside airport security and tossing a grenade into the middle of the crowd. Hell, you could toss a fake grenade and shout "Allah Akbar", and a bunch of people would get killed in the panicked stampede. The equivalent of shouting "fire" in a theater.

So, are any of you saying that someone couldn't have enough Semtex or C4 surgically implanted into them (no need to worry about infection or being overly skillful) and detonate it aboard an airplane with catostrophic results ? The normal TSA measures would be ineffective (either pat down or scatter machines) because it would be inside the person.

I'm not saying this is actually in the planning stages, but theoretically it could pose a major problem for screening at airports if someone could figure out how to do it without inadvertent detonation. Hell, you could kill more people in the crowded terminal than aboard the plane, and the entire terminal would be shut down indefinitely.

The Batman movie Heath Ledger played the Joker. Used a cell phone to detonate a bomb in another prisoner to blow up the jail. Makes sense, Stephan Hawking decided the aliens coming here might not be friendly, maybe he saw Independence Day, or War of the Worlds, or any other movie where the aliens try to kill us.

Yes I've seen the movie - that's not really the same thing. He was just trying to kill that guy. This would be terrorists trying to cause mass murder.

I said it's plausible. But it's funny that it's always someone "anonymous" who isn't allowed to speak on the "sensitive nature" who do this. It's probably an analyst who saw one report and went to the news. For them to target an airport, there would be an extreme amount of planning to be done.

Again, it's quite possible for an attack like this to occur - however you need money, logistics, and willing participants. And explosives that won't prematurely detonate only killing the person the explosives are in.

Our adversaries have all these things at their disposal. Neither Semtex or C4 will explode without a trigger, I don't think.

It was in the movie, not saying it was possible, just sayin it was in the movie. Maybe the dude/dudette who came up with this as a threat to our aircraft saw it on TV while half-asleep, maybe the bad guys saw it on Blu-Ray in there cave, I dunno, just throwin it out there. Aliens have to do with movies as sources of info (aliens aren't nice and want to kill us as in movie A and B) rather than terrorists. I tend to jump around while posting, but not that much.

Problem that I suggested, and MM's link also shows - is that while blowing yourself up from an internal explosive is possible, its difficult to cause serious damage to the people and environment around you. If the guy who attacked that Saudi Prince had instead detonated inside an airplane - he might have killed a few people, but it is highly unlikely he could have downed the plane. Depressurized it maybe, but that doesn't quite qualify as "catastrophic results".
