Default Iran website heralding 'Mahdi' by springtime
An official state media website in Iran has posted a message heralding the coming of the Shiite messianic figure, Imam Mahdi, noting he could arrive with Jesus by the spring equinox...

Antonios,

I can't, I fear, resist this one - so it is a case of 'Springtime for Mahdi, and Islam too' then? (Apologies to all, not least Mel Brooks).

In contrition,

John

John,

If the Mahdi is going to arrive with Jesus, as noted in the article, than my answer would be "Maranatha!"

That being said, I have ALOT of repentance to do in the next few months...

Well, I'm ready for the Mahdi (presumably a different one from the one who battled with General Gordon at Khartoum), but not for Our Lord!

Andreas.

Does Mahdi stand for a particular person, or for a category of person.

As you mention, I recall Gordon fighting against the Mahdi, and Corporal Jones in Dad's Army (if you know the classic British comedy series) is often speaking of fighting the Mad Mahdi in the Sudan.

Was and is that Mahdi considered by some Muslims to be THE Mahdi?

Which Mahdi are the Muslims reported in the press expecting?

Peter

Dear Andreas,

At least if the Mahdi comes early you are in Moscow and in reach of many Orthodox sources of help!

For the rest, well, we are none of us ready - and rely on His infinite mercy to judge us as He wishes, and not according to our deserts.

Sounds as though Moscow is going well - but how could it not?

In Christ,

John

The Mahdi is the twelth imam... he has supposedly been hiding for the past few hundred years and will return to rule the world in righteousness with all the prophets and saints. He is a major figure in Shi'a Islam. They are very much into their saints and devotion to them, and the Mahdi is pretty much their Messiah.

The reference to the coming of Jesus reminds me of another prediction. Those of us with long enough memories may recall a Scot by the name of Benjamin Creme who announced to the world that Jesus Christ had come to earth, and was living high in the Himalayas, in preparation for His second coming. A further announcement (headlined "Second Helping of Creme" - subeditors had lots of fun with this story) gave a more specific date, June 21 of that year, for the "coming". What year was this? 1982.

Ah, but given the date of 1982, isn't the significant fact that so are the rest of us?

True, but I just wanted to point out that Creme and his crew are still very much on the missionary trail.

Dear Paul,

Thanks for the reminder - and before the end of Lent too! We shall just have to manage it all without a steak; that's a trial!

Dear John:

If he comes in 9 days now, I am having a steak. I mean if OUR Christ comes in 9 days he is not the Christ I was worshipping then what will it matter.

salivatingly yours,

Paul

The Mahdi never comes when you expect him to. God has too good of a sense of humor for that to happen.
