I can't, I fear, resist this one - so it is a case of 'Springtime for Mahdi, and Islam too' then? (Apologies to all, not least Mel Brooks). In contrition, John |

Does Mahdi stand for a particular person, or for a category of person.
As you mention, I recall Gordon fighting against the Mahdi, and Corporal Jones in Dad's Army (if you know the classic British comedy series) is often speaking of fighting the Mad Mahdi in the Sudan. Was and is that Mahdi considered by some Muslims to be THE Mahdi? Which Mahdi are the Muslims reported in the press expecting? Peter |

Well, I'm ready for the Mahdi (presumably a different one from the one who battled with General Gordon at Khartoum), but not for Our Lord! At least if the Mahdi comes early you are in Moscow and in reach of many Orthodox sources of help! For the rest, well, we are none of us ready - and rely on His infinite mercy to judge us as He wishes, and not according to our deserts. Sounds as though Moscow is going well - but how could it not? In Christ, John |

The reference to the coming of Jesus reminds me of another prediction. Those of us with long enough memories may recall a Scot by the name of Benjamin Creme who announced to the world that Jesus Christ had come to earth, and was living high in the Himalayas, in preparation for His second coming. A further announcement (headlined "Second Helping of Creme" - subeditors had lots of fun with this story) gave a more specific date, June 21 of that year, for the "coming". What year was this? 1982.
