![]() New Straits Times Wednesday, Feb 22, 2012 SEPANG - A Nigerian man, who swallowed 39 capsules containing methamphetamine or syabu, died on Monday at the Serdang Hospital here after one of the capsules burst in his stomach. An autopsy conducted on the 40-year-old drug mule on Monday night revealed that he had died of an overdose. The coroner also recovered 38 intact and a burst capsule, believed to contain syabu, during the post-mortem. The incident unfolded on Sunday when the Nigerian arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport about 10am on a flight from Dubai. He was detained after he was found behaving in a suspicious manner. "An initial body check did not reveal anything suspicious nor did a thorough search of his luggage. However, the suspect was sent to the hospital as authorities believed he had swallowed capsules containing drugs," a source disclosed. "After being X-rayed, police discovered that the suspect had a substantial number of capsules in his stomach. However, while waiting for the suspect to excrete, he suddenly collapsed." It is understood that one of the capsules had burst. It was believed that the suspect had been smuggling the syabu for a drug syndicate in the Middle East. Meanwhile, in a separate case, nine Nigerians and three local women were arrested by police in a series of raids in Puchong and Selayang on Sunday. Police also seized 7kg of cannabis and a kilogramme of syabu worth RM273,000 (S$113,601). The first raid was in Puchong at 7.30am when, acting on a tip-off, a police team raided an apartment and nabbed five Nigerian men and three local women. A search of the premises yielded 190gm of cannabis and a kilogramme of syabu or ice. Police later found 700gm of cannabis inside a rental car belonging to one of the suspects. "In a follow-up operation at a different apartment, also in the Puchong area, police nabbed two Nigerian men and found 1.9kg of cannabis on them," the source disclosed. This was followed by the arrest of two other Nigerian men in Selayang where police also found 4.5 kg of cannabis. |
