Boy, ashamed over video of sister fighting, hangs himself

KOTA KINABALU: Upset and embarrassed over his sister’s involvement in a school fight, a 17-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in the backyard of his house. His 48-year-old school assistant father made the shocking discovery when he opened the kitchen window the next morning and saw the lifeless body of his son, Japinus, hanging from a rambutan tree.

The Form Five student was at first angry when a video of the fight, recorded on a mobile phone, circulated among his schoolmates two weeks ago. He felt ashamed over the incident and on Sunday, decided to hang himself with a nylon rope at his house in Kampung Lima, Nabawan some 220km from the city, said Keningau district police chief Dep Supt Zahari Mohamed yesterday.

“There is no evidence to indicate the boy was involved in the fight. “From what we gathered from the family, he was ashamed of the video recording. “He felt that it had tarnished the family’s image and it was difficult for him to accept,” Zahari added. Police were investigating if Japinus had personal problems before the incident.

In another case, Sabah Information Department assistant director Ramli Saidi, 27, was found dead in the living room of his apartment at Taman Mutiara in Labuan on Monday. Sabah police Criminal Investigations Department deputy chief Asst Comm Khalil Khadir said Ramli’s body was discovered hanging from the ceiling of the living room by his fiancée Rohaizah Zainal at about 1pm.

Rohaizah told the police Ramli had invited her for lunch and when he failed to turn up, she went to his apartment to look for him. When she arrived, the door was locked and Rohaizah, with the help of neighbours, broke down the door. “Ramli had related to me the stress he had been facing through several SMSes over the past week,” Rohaizah said. Anyone with information about the incident should contact the police, said ACP Khalil.
