Default Iran sentences 2 American men to 8 years in jail
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI - Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Two American men arrested more than two years ago while hiking along the Iraq-Iran border have been sentenced to eight years in prison for espionage and illegally entering Iran, state TV reported Saturday.

The announcement appeared to dash hopes for the imminent release of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal after Iran's foreign minister suggested earlier this month that the trial could clear the way for their freedom.

I'm far from a fan of Iran and regret we didn't turn Tehran into a parking lot when they took the Embassy hostages back in
1980, but that being said why were three US civilian adults hiking the Iraq / Iran border to begin with? Iran is one of our
worst enemies and there's still to this day major turmoil in Iraq. I just don't get it.
The word on KYW is now that the two men have been sentenced they could, best case scenario, receive a suspended
sentence and be set free probably with another 500K bail as they did with the woman.
Btw we have plenty of cause to ruin Iran's day that doesn't include stupid hikers, imo.

Yeah, it really sucks, but come on!

"Hey, lets go hiking in a country we are fighting in on the board of another country that hates us. Wow, that's such a great idea!!" heavy sarcasm...

The Iranians thought they'd hit the jackpot when they arrested them but neither the State Department nor the White House has been willing to play ball and their clever plan hasn't worked out quite the way they were expecting.

I ask that every time an American goes hiking along the edge of a country where they're likely to be arrested as spies.

Any of my friends that suggest we go 'hiking' along places where I'm likely to be arrested, detained, and grow old in a prison... well they're not very good friends are they?

We have surrounded their country w/ our army and constantly threaten them .. what would you expect US to do if Iran occupied Mexico and Canada and constantly threatened US? There is no conflict w/ Iran beyond what our politicians have created.

In fairness our beef isn't with Iran's citizens but with the wacko president, ayatumah, and the revolutionary guards. After they
allowed the US embassy hostages to leave any dispute should have been closed, but they chose to denigrate the US at
every opportunity while burning the stars & stripes by the dozens during fanatical chants of "great satan".
As regards Iran surrounding the US recall they couldn't even subdue Iraq.

So we should beat our war drums b/ they burn the stars & stripes and call US the great satan? You just described 75% of the radical left .. should we attack them as well?

That said .... if they did surround our country with their troops; how would we react?

Citation needed.

That said .... if they did surround our country with their troops; how would we react? I understand it's right on their checklist really. Right after they build a warp drive for their starship.

Seriously ... if Iran had 1000's of troops occupying Canada & Mexico and beating the drums of war ... how would we react?

The fine average citizens (troops) of Iran have no beef with the US and rather than surround it would apply for visas, although
I might add you guys have more than your share of nutjobs. Btw has there been a lot of rain there this week?

We'd react by watching the drug cartels and cartelitos erase them off the face of the Earth. If the Mexican Army on home soil can't stop the Drug trade, do you think the cartels would let Iran come into their backyard and mulch a trillion dollar industry? And you realize that no one bothers to invade Canada right?

That's why your question is so silly that it can't be bothered with a real answer.

As far as invasion, we're pretty set, and willing to give Arizona away for the right price.

It isn't silly if you really want to understand Irans relationship w/ America but I can understand why you would want to discuss it
