800 evacuated as Iceland volcano erupts - CNN.com

Icelandic authorities evacuated about 800 people early Wednesday when a volcano erupted beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, an emergency spokesman said.
Yeah...At least they don't have to worry about their debt..

Nah. Just about everyone lives in Reykjavik. It doesn't look like it should affect them.

Maybe the heat from the volcano will add some color to their Bjork-like fair features...

Looks like Iceland is spreading the love...

Travel chaos as ash closes air space - CNN.com

European countries shut their airspace one after the other Thursday as a cloud of volcanic ash wafted over from Iceland and posed a danger to flights.
Airspace over the United Kingdom was closed for six hours, from noon to 6 p.m. (7 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET), a spokesman for Britain's Civil Aviation Authority said. Authorities may extend the window depending on how the ashes move in the atmosphere, he said.
Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands also announced the closure of their airspace, authorities in each country said. Norway also closed its ocean territory and canceled helicopter flights to off-shore oil installations, according to Avinor, the Norwegian agency responsible for the Norwegian airport network.

First their banks, then their government, now their land.

Poor Iceland, went from the best place to live on earth to hell on earth in two year...

Iceland will be blown up by a volcano soon. And another after that. Such is the nature of Iceland.

Google "Surtsey" to read about an island that formed off Iceland in 1963 when a volcanic cone erupted through the ocean surface.

My friend just tweeted he was 3.5 hrs into a SanFran->Heathrow flight and the plane turned back to SanFran. BA told him they won't be budging for at least 24 hours.

Another friend barely made it home from Lake Garda (he probably would have been happier getting stuck).

Hope this doesn't translates into loss of human lives, or that affects that much Iceland's infrastruture, it's not like they need it.

On the bright side, we could use some ashes and SO2, will cool the earth down, and calm down some tree huggers out there.

...while another friend of mine (who runs a ferry service) is tweeting about having a mini-boom out of this:

looks like the busiest day ever at Fastnet Line - it's an ill (volcanic ash) wind that doesn't blow some good.

Still some places left with Fastnet Line for tonights sailing. The call center is getting hammered by the volume of calls

some of the pictures of the Islandic mountain ranges and green plains look almost like those panoramic views of "Middle Earth" in Lord of the Rings. Beautiful.

The volcano will keep on erupting until someone can manage to pronounce "Eyjafjallajoekull" correctly.

What is hilarious about all this is that Gordon Brown used the UK terrorism laws to seize the deposits of one of the Icelandic banks doing business in the UK and siezed all its UK assets, upsetting Icelanders.

Now Iceland itself is the cause for bringing all UK aviation to a complete halt.

Now my friend in SanFran is being told he will be stuck there until Tuesday if he wants to go SanFran->Heathrow direct. He will probably end up flying to NY and (hopefully) stay with me for a while.

Apparently the PM of Norway is stuck in NY and is running the country remotely from his shiny new iPad.

Who says legalisation doesn't increase usage? Sneaky trick blaming the whole thing on a volcano.

I doubt anyone needs a translation.

Volcanic Ash Could Last Months, Larger Nearby Volcano Could Soon Erupt Too - Eyjafjallajokull volcanic ash - Gizmodo

Now, experts are saying that the Eyjafjallajokull eruption could likely trigger activity at Mount Katla, a nearby glacier volcano that's even larger and potentially more dangerous. It's not erupted since 1918, but "volcanologists" are saying it's very close to blowing its top. We can already expect the volcanic ash to hang around in the skies for the next couple of weeks, but if Katla goes then it might last for months. Back in 1783 another volcano in Iceland caused thick fog across Europe and even spread as far as the US, for eight whole months.
