Wow, dude, you're en epic f--king scumbag. Are you the pretentious version of blindingsun? I don't care if you hate Username or whoever, but wishing death and suffering on innocent people is over the top.

Had you more than two brain cells to rub together you would realize the critical flaw in Username's thinking...
Gosh, and to think you're even on my side. Thanks, Saily.

very insightful analysis of Leveau's argument, however.

He just doesn't know how to be politiclly correct, not to mention he's out of touch with popular culture. Everyone wants to give money to Haiti this week.....it's the fashionable thing to do.

The citizens of Haiti are still human and deserve any help they receive. Using incidents from 200 years ago for reasons not to help someone is pretty pathetic. Most of us have been lucky enough to have been born in the U.S. and enjoy a lifestyle that many people of the world only dream of.

Limbaugh said on his radio show yesterday that he wouldn't trust that money donated to Haiti through the White House Web site would actually go to the relief efforts. He said Americans don't need to contribute to earthquake relief because they already donate to Haiti through their income taxes. He's got a point.
Remember the Tsunami? And all the millions/billions donated from the world over? Remember there were numerous stories about how the money wasn't getting to the relief efforts? Millions unaccounted for.

There are plenty of charities out there holding their hat out for cash donations. There is even a Facebook movement going on: Press #### on your cell phone and donate $10.

I know it's cynical to say, but I think at these times of crisis some nonprofits really make out well, and the $$ you think is going directly to Haiti does not.

He's may have a point, but I don't think the Haitian government is in a great position to siphon off funds like they could if they were functioning normally (haha). The government itself got tarred pretty bad too.

I do have to wonder, though, if the situation will permit local gangs or warlords to form, either funded through legitimately or illegitimately-obtain aid funds.

Still, I encourage others to donate right now, as long as it's to reputable organizations.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO HAYTI? Do you know that the celebrated leader of the slaves at the time ripped the white section out of the French flag (to create the current Hayti flag), saying, "As we have ripped apart the whites in Hayti, so I rip out the white of their flag"?
Do you have a source for this? I've tried looking for it and have come up with nothing.

Haiti's Presidential palace

The UN building (where a lot of defacto everyday government functions were being run before the quake)

I'll be a jerk, an honest jerk, and say it really doesn't make a difference to me at all. I read somewhere that the number of deaths needed to desensitize the average American is 2... we're no more sympathetic to 200,000 or 2 million than we are to 2.

I don't think there is anything wrong with not being moved by a particular event (the Tsunami a few years ago just seemed impossibly remote to me). My only problem comes when people cast aspersions on the victims' fitness to even receive sympathy or help. You've been respectful, therefore I think there's no reason to consider you a jerk for feeling the way you do.

I care more about Cleveland, or Detroit. I wish people would pour 100s of millions into the poor US cities and rural areas.

Its human nature to want to help people in need, but its also human nature to have an us-vs-them mentality. We're not even capable, most of us, of grieving those not part of our personal 'tribe.'

I'd like to see 100's of millions go into modern manufacturing plants and let the people with jobs bring back those cities.

I think the humanitarian disaster is staggering. I think to a certain extent its so bad that if the US does not step up a little in terms of setting up a transitional rule of law, ripples in terms of possibly creating a Somali-like broken state an hour off our shores is entirely possible. I think that kind of total failure, piracy and mass starvation and mass emigration by boat to the US by a couple million starving people is a real security issue.

+1

Or propose that people who ARE moved to help are only doing so out of some desire to stay current with pop culture trends. I'd much rather stay current with beer trends but forwarded a modest remittance (to direct aid, disaster response charities) nonetheless in the spirit of paying for this weekend's case with credit. If people- myself included- won't or can't take from this how unfortunate the average disaster struck Haitian is maybe we can be reminded how fortunate we are by comparison. I literally thought of people in this disaster last night as I was cursing my stupid #$%*ing stuck zipper and thought, ffs, I need to chill.

Did anyone see this clip of Jerry Springer's new show?

Bill Cunningham: "There are no dirt poor people in America" on Vimeo

His guest bill cunningham says there are no dirt poor people in America. while of course that's total crap, he has a point: we don't "suffer" poverty the way people in other nations do. People from other countries come here to do the worst, poorest-paid jobs because being poor here is a luxury compared to their lives...
