Swiss vote to ban minarets showcases new populism | csmonitor.com
Minaret - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In what many see as a major setback to Europe's effort to integrate its booming Muslim population – and a potential boost to right-wing parties throughout the continent – Swiss voters Sunday approved a move to ban the construction of new minarets in the country. The Swiss government had urged voters to reject the ban, saying that it would violate religious freedom and human rights and intensify Islamic radicalism. But in Sunday's referendum, which was organized by a right-wing political party, more than 57 percent of Swiss residents – a majority in 22 out of the country's 26's cantons – approved the proposal. "Muslims don't just practice religion, they increasingly make political and legal demands," said Walter Wobmann, who heads the initiative behind the referendum. "The vote results shows that the Swiss do not want minarets or Sharia laws in their country." Well I hope they do enjoy what happen in Madrid and London, and New York....Because they just moved to the top of the list... Next they should ban and burn this place down: Lausanne Cathedral - Lausanne, Switzerland |

Funny, I was just reading this over at Fark.com.
We've got lots of mosques here in Philly. None of them have minarets. The Swiss form of government shows why direct democracy is a very bad idea, as it leads to the tyranny of the majority. For instance: women were not allowed to vote in Switzerland until the 1950's. |

Moslems don't want to integrate, they want Sharia Law - for everybody. Enough said. SOME Muslims -the fundamentalists ones- want to dominate the Earth and enact Sharia law for everyone. But most are much more circumspect. SOME Christians -the fundamentalist ones- want to turn this country into Jesusland and burn people like myself at the stake. But most are more circumspect. |

Believe what you want, but I don't hear about Christians blowing themselves and others to smithereens in the name of their messiah. But then again, who knows what they did before they took over the western world. And don't forget the children crusade..So again, who knows what history we are missing... |

No, Christians never were a fan of blowing themselves up, after all their religion doesn't promise them anything for killing themselves for their religion, only if they get themselves killed for their religion do they get something. Nevermind, I see you were being sarcastic. |

Do you actually know anything about anything at all? Really? Your professed ignorance is simply shocking. Even by Trolling standards it is really dismal. I cannot decide which is worse: That you are pretending to be such an idiot, or that you really are. Neither one speaks very well of you. |

He's fight two fights at once, so it'll spill into other topics.
Anyway, back on topic: AFP: Egypt mufti says Swiss minaret ban insults Muslims Egypt's Mufti Ali Gomaa denounced a vote to ban new minarets in Switzerland on Sunday as an "insult" to Muslims across the world, while calling on Muslims not to be provoked by the move. "This proposal...is not considered just an attack on freedom of beliefs, but also an attempt to insult the feelings of the Muslim community in and outside Switzerland," Gomaa, the Egyptian government's official interpreter of Islamic law, told the state-run news agency MENA. He encouraged Switzerland's 400,000-strong Muslim community to use "dialogue" and legal means to contest the ban, which he described as "provocative behaviour." Gomaa also called on Muslims not to be affected "by this provocation," adding that Islam "considers humanity a single family." It's nice to see someone trying to slow this before it does turn bad... |

How come every country with a substantial Muslim population has a problem with them trying to take control of the government? Phillipines, Spain, parts of Russia, Pakistan, Turkey, the entire continent of Africa, etc. Seriously, its the age old human fear of a minority population taking over, which is usually blow out of proportion and leads to genocide. Its like when the Philippines and Africa used to have a problem with its substantial xtians population... |
