Lemme see...There was that Airbus that had to make an emergency landing in the Hudson, and then there was that Boeing that fell flat on top of that lady's house outside of Buffalo and subsequently blew up, and then there was that crash in Turkey, and after that, I open the paper and what do I see but a crash in the Netherlands? Honestly, this is ridiculous! It's not like it's confined to a single carrier or maker so WTF is going on?

Statistically, once per week somewhere around the world an airliner is struck (destroyed) in some type of mishap. Usually they happen in obscure places so people don't pay that much attention, but sometimes it hits closer to home. I personally think that we are coming out of a couple year period of amazingly safe flying; at any given time there are 40,000 people in the air over America, the population of a small town.

I suppose it's possible that the media is bringing them to our attention more, but I agree with GMonkey- with all the cuts, etc., I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't taking care of the planes like they should, (wasn't there something about that a while back?) and less experienced people in critical jobs.

the hudson flight was due to a flock of birds. Turkish airlines actually had one of the better maintenance and safety records around. wasn't the buffalo, ny pilot error? |

I wasn't just referring to the ones lately, and I just said I wouldn't be surprised... but I asked this question myself about a year or so ago. It SEEMS like there has been a general escalation in them...but that doesn't make it so. |
