Default What's with all the plane crashes lately?
Lemme see...There was that Airbus that had to make an emergency landing in the Hudson, and then there was that Boeing that fell flat on top of that lady's house outside of Buffalo and subsequently blew up, and then there was that crash in Turkey, and after that, I open the paper and what do I see but a crash in the Netherlands? Honestly, this is ridiculous! It's not like it's confined to a single carrier or maker so WTF is going on?

40,000 die in cars every year in the US.

Plane crashes are few and far between.

I do think they capture the imagination becuase if you're in one ( a crash) you're powerless and they tend to be quite photogenic with this big hulking mass of smoking metal.

On a positive note, there have been more survivors of these crashes than usual.

The airline industry has been struggling, an there aren't as many experienced people in critical positions.

Someone is toying with the space/time continuum.

I'd say it's the law of averages catching up with us. It's been awful quiet on the plane crash front for many years, so you figure sooner or later that's going to change.

Statistically, once per week somewhere around the world an airliner is struck (destroyed) in some type of mishap. Usually they happen in obscure places so people don't pay that much attention, but sometimes it hits closer to home. I personally think that we are coming out of a couple year period of amazingly safe flying; at any given time there are 40,000 people in the air over America, the population of a small town.

I suppose it's possible that the media is bringing them to our attention more, but I agree with GMonkey- with all the cuts, etc., I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't taking care of the planes like they should, (wasn't there something about that a while back?) and less experienced people in critical jobs.

the hudson flight was due to a flock of birds. Turkish airlines actually had one of the better maintenance and safety records around. wasn't the buffalo, ny pilot error?

I wasn't just referring to the ones lately, and I just said I wouldn't be surprised... but I asked this question myself about a year or so ago. It SEEMS like there has been a general escalation in them...but that doesn't make it so.

there was a spot on the news talking about the crashes. in 2008 there were 109 crashes vs 100 crashes in 2007. what was more shocking, I suppose, is that 100 less people died. It used ot be a plane went down and everyone died. Aside form the miracle on the hudson, it's pretty amazing how many survived in amsterdam. that plane looked to be in pretty bad shape. they attribute "survival" to improved safety systems and materials.

It appears to be icing-related, based on the info released so far. The only thing more dangerous to an aircraft than icing is a massive fire or major structural failure e.g. wings ripping off. The only pilot error appears to be the failure of the pilots to disable autopilot and take manual control, although I tend to doubt that would have changed the outcome, if the aircraft has iced up to the degree speculated in media reports. All that could change and we may find out it was something else, when the NTSB releases the report late this year or next.
