Default Activists blast Saudi Arabia beheadings
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - A human rights group said Thursday that Saudi Arabia violated international law when it ordered the beheadings earlier this week of four Sri Lankan robbers and then left their headless bodies on public display in the capital of Riyadh.

Human Rights Watch said the four men had no lawyers during their trial and sentencing, and were denied other basic legal rights. The group called on Saudi Arabia to halt all pending executions and retry those remaining on death row.

"The execution of these four migrants, who had been badly beaten and locked up for years without access to lawyers, is a travesty of justice," Sarah Leah Whitson, the Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, said in a report.

"International law only allows states to use the death penalty for the most serious crimes and in the most stringent of circumstances — and neither condition was met in this case," Whitson said.

Saudi officials did not respond to a request for comment on the Human Rights Watch report.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam that calls for people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery to be executed in public with a sword. Beheaded bodies are only displayed when there is a specific court order in cases considered particularly offensive.

The four Sri Lankans were convicted of forming a gang that robbed several companies, threatened accountants and workers with weapons and shot one of them and stole his car, said the Saudi Interior Ministry.

Saudi Arabia is a freaky place. Women are not allowed to drive. No mixing between genders, which is enforced by religous police.

And basically anything that is considered fun, like movie theaters, nightclubs, amusement parks, etc is outlawed.

So the people get entertained by watching public beheadings after prayers.

I had a friend who worked a contract in Saudi, and he brought home these magazines he got there, any picture that showed any skin, had been marked over with a black marker. They actually pay people to do this. What a bunch of weirdos.

Well american Justice used to be very swift back in the colonial days. And it used to be very tough back in mid 1800s.But not anymore cause of Liberalism prevented cruel and unusual punishments.

Yeah, it's too bad really. I mean, it also sought to curb arbitrary power, to promote human rights, to establish freedom, to create that experiment in democracy called the United States of America. If only the royalists managed to maintain the power of the state over the individual, if only.

Not to be a dick, but I have no remorse for these guys.

I mean, if you're going to go to another country and start a gang that robs and shoots people, Saudi Arabia is pretty horrible choice of location.

Funny you mentioned cruel and unusul punishment. I know this is off subject but now lethal injections are considered cruel and unusual. With dogs and cats it's considered humane. But with humans it's not humane? I don't know.

Okay, so in Steve's warped way, he's given a new defense tactic to the lawyers.

ACLU lawyer: My client has been suffering from liver disease and needed a transplant. His greedy, soleless insurance company, in order to make huge profits at the expense and suffering of the sick, with the complicity of the Bush administration's effort to kill old people, was told "no" for this basic human need and right. He therefore, had no choice but to off his neighbor with a sawzall in an effort to have what should be his in the first place. He is a product of our money grubbing society and the evil that is the Bush adminstration and a victim of corporate insensitivity. He should not and cannot be held responsible for his actions. We therefore pray the court order that he be given a liver transplant along with $5 million from the insurance company for his suffering. Less 40% for fees plus expenses of course.

Judge: Hrrumph

That is because China has been declared a "most-Favored Nation"

Hill and Billary did that one for us.

49. George Bush holds the record for the most executions sanctioned by a governor in history...he smashed Sam Houston's record and that guy was governor of two different states that both carried the death penalty.

But proportionatly speaking they still execute more people (% of the total population) their execution rate is denser than ours.

That's due to that pesky thing about fredom and rule of law and all that appeal stuff that let's the likes of Scott Peterson have 25 years on Death Row before getting fried.

Silva said he and Victor Corea, Sanath Pushpakumara, and Sharmila Sangeeth Kumara, took up armed robberies in early 2004 because their Saudi employer was paying them each only $67 of the $107 a month agreed in their contract — money that barely covered lodgings. I wonder if they are also going to cut off their employers hands and feet for breaching the contract/stealing from them.
