Default Exxon Does It Again
I'm surprised none of you corporate hating types didn't beat me to this. Exxon reports another record profit. This time it is $39.5 billion. My hats off to the management of Exxon. I'm sorry, but no matter what they get paid..it's not enough.

BTW...tha's about a 10.5% return on their revenue. Here's a poser for the liberals that think profit is evil. If your 401(k) returned 10.5% per year, would you be happy? Would you think that was an unfair return on your money and give it back to the people that bought the products that generated the profit for the companies in your fund?

Here's another one. How many jobs do you think will be created with the reinvestment Exxon/Mobile is going to do with their profits? And do you think some of that investment will be in research and development of new and alternative sources of energy?

The question I think is most relevant is, would they have "earned" a single penny in the absence of anything which can be fairly construed as a subsidy?

don't expect an answer to that as no liberals, including myself, believe profit can only be evil. try altering your question so it doesn't fit in the strict context of a simple conservative black and white world.

The question made no mention of profit being evil. It's a legit question but one that I'm sure you will find challenging not to expose any hypocracy.

WTG Steve. If any one was remotely paying attention in the fall of '05, they would have bought energy stocks and specifically Exxon/Mobile.

Since there are no liberals who think profit is evil his question isn't going to be answered.

Yeah, and that investment surplus you are earning goes back to the expense you pay at the pump, which is going right back into Exxon/Mobile. You aren't really making all that much more.

I really am unsure as to what you think about being wealthy, but some people just want to live comfortably. Not everyone is money-hungry. Sure, that would be a sweet percentage, but I think that not all executive benefits are deserved. It's all about rank and title - not production. What do you think they should be paid and what about the mid-grade employees who also made that goal happen by providing their services?

Thank you for answering Iron. Everyone else is afraid. The questions was not about how wealthy one should be, or should want to be. 401(k)'s aren't going to make you wealthy. My point was that when it comes to your own investments, of course you want to make as much as you can. So why should it be any different for a corporation who has a responsibility to its investors and its employees. 10% for a mutual fund these days is only average. The answer should have been; "I'd look into higher yielding funds".

I agree not all executive benefits are deserved. Neither are all regular workers. I'm sure the mid-grade employees of Exxon benefited also with stock bonuses/options/offerings they probably receive in their benefits package. Complete speculation on my part but at the minimum, Exxon matches their 401(k) contributions.

You said it Curly. Record profits like this definately need subsidies from our Record deficit government.

Since no one picked up on it, or bothered to think about it, I'll finish this thread for you. Exxon's "record" is only in dollar amounts. Their profit is 10% of their revenues. Not even close to a record but big media (who's profit margins regularly far exceed Exxon's) would have you believe this is big news.

Why is it that no one is mad about the profits of the insurance companies? They are either equal or greater than that of Exxon.

You're going to confuse a helluva lot of people who seem to be genetically incapable of comprehending the difference between "absolute" and "margin" if you keep on talking that way.
