Default Parishioners tackle gunman in church
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Parishioners tackled a gunman suspected of snatching purses from church pews during Mass, the pastor and police said.

One man suffered lacerations to his head and face during the struggle at Christ the King Catholic Church on Sunday morning, police said.

Wendell K. Hollingsworth, 43, Celeste M. Smith, 51, were arrested and each charged with aggravated robbery at the church, police said. They were being held in the Franklin County jail Monday, awaiting bond.

The pair walked into the service and grabbed purses as Hollingsworth displayed a handgun and said, "This is a robbery," police said.

Hollingsworth was tackled as parishioners called police on cell phones. Smith was arrested outside the church, police said.

"Our parishioners are not about to let anyone defile their church," said the Rev. Michael Lumpe.

See!! Now why do we need the police? The Police were no where to be found when gunman try tio rob the Church.Wanna know why police didnt charge a bunch of people with vigilantism? Cause its in columbus ohio. And Columbus dont have anti Gun laws like they do in vermont,Masseschutes or even in New York City.If you commit vigilantism in vermont,Masseschutes or in New York City the police will charge the suspect with armed robbery but he will also turn right around and arrest you with illegal possesion of a firearm.Just like that girl who was almost raped in a parking garage in new york she used pepper spray and she dialed 911 on her cell phone called the police. The Police arrested the suspect but he turns right around and confidscated girls pepper spray and cited her $74 and told her Pepper Sprays are illegal in New York City.Police Officers should be protecting people not issue them citations for defending themselves.Thats why states like Texas and Florida have "Make my day Laws" The laws are simple. Ordinary People in Florida can carry guns and when someone trespasses on their property the person has the right to shoot them without question and theres not a damn thing cops can do about it.Read Floridas make my day laws here.Fla. Gun Law to Expand Leeway for Self-Defense Thats why Jeb Bush has taken the powers away from the police and allow private citizens to defend themselves. And i have a GUN in my car.Anyone tries to carjack me is gotta get it right in the chest though the heart.

Fortunately the people in the church, unlike you, were wise enough to call the police so that this fellow could be arrested and tried.

Though I suppose you would have preferred a good old fashioned lynch mob?

Actually, I'd have no problem with a good old fashioned lynch mob in a case like this. I think Americans have become a bunch of pussies and that is why we have so much crime.

But, yes, calling the police while all of this was going on was probably the best course of action.

Wow, the death penelty for attempted armed robbery now?
And by lynching no less?

That certainly sounds like justice: "You take my purse; I take your life".

More seriously though, where I used to live (in the Southwest) "make my day" laws required that:
1) You could not use deadly force unless there was reason to believe that you were in danger of death or serious bodily harm.
2) You must declare your intention to use force BEFORE doing it. Meaning basically you have to give the guy a chance to just go away.

So if someone breaks into your house and starts unplugging your TV and you step out of the bed room and just blow him away, you go to jail. You have to tell him "Leave or I'll shoot" and then give him a chance to leave.

Basically, the restrictions keep you from killing someone over something minor, like trespassing or petty theft.

We have a similar law in CO. That doesn't preclude the necessity of having a permit to carry a concealed firearm.

Im telling you criminals are more scared of you than the police.Hell they laugh at the police cause theyre trained to haul you to jail and then your lawyer will get you right back on the streets in no time. When you meet face to face with a criminal Just Pull the trigger and then he cant rob anyone again.

He never said he was carrying concealed. His state most likely fully permits open carry.

And then you got a liberal judge will only give him 5 years in prison and then a liberal parole board will come in and grant him parole. Then hes back on the streets smelling the air of freedom again and then he`ll Rob someone else again. So Shoot em!! So they can enter hell and they cant come out. The only 2 people have escaped death was Jesus Christ and Houdini.

Think Houdini did die... and as for Jesus, well, I haven't seen him around for the last 2000 years or so. But maybe he's hiding out with Osama somewhere

He's carrying it in his car. You suppose he's leaving it out on the seat?
