I voted "fair" - given limited ability and limited material, he did ok, but it was nothing special or even particularly good. He made his best speech right after 9/11, and he's gone downhill ever since.

It was a snooze--nothing really new from last years and the response from dems was even more of a snooze.

As I was listening..I was struck by something when he began talking about health care cost and insurance for the poor...without a doubt, almost word for word, these very statements were spoken by Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton and now Bush Jr.

This speaks volumes about the level of corruption and inactivity of our government.

Ditto on talking about Social Security - Jesus, how many times are we going to hear "we have to fix Social Security now"???

I have no faith in our Congress no matter who is in the majority. Did you hear where last year alone over 13,000 pork projects were tagged on to bill AFTER they were voted on!!??
Congress is a cesspool and a den of thieves...and this will not change as long as 75% of Americans know more about the Survivor series than the country they live in.

Perhaps Rome's fate is not as far in the distance as we might think.

I just wish he would learn to pronounce "nuclear". Can't his advisers stress the importance of gravitas and dignity to him?

Ever listen to how Barney Frank sounds when HE talks?

Talk about a "lack of gravitas"! That Democrat guy sounds incredibly light in the loafers...

Yet strangely you never hear the Driveby Media fret over Barney Frank's lack of gravitas, but that same leftist biased media will point out Bush's manner of speech and insinuate he somehow "lacks gravitas".

Barney the Democrat's speech mannerisms are FAR more pathetic than are Bush's.

Perhaps so, but in fairness, Frank isn't the President - nor is he the worst speaker in the Congress.

The fact that Barney Frank isn't president (thank God!) is irrelevent.

Unless one feels that only the president (and not the members of Congress) need possess gravitas.

It was okay.

I thought his introduction of Pelosi, and her acknowledgement, was pretty gracious. It would've been easy to not make a big deal of it.

As for substance, Hell, it's nothing new.

The whole evening seemed, well, almost "polite".

Nice to see the folks in the Gallery recognized, especially the guy who jumped on the subway tracks...

What a jerk off session that speech was. Make statement clap....make statement....clap....repeat 100 times. Holy shizzle just give the damn speech and hold the applause until the end. Content wise it sounded like a bunch of empty promises. The standard GW strong statements and no real follow up or action.

To succeed last night he had to turn public opinion around on Iraq, and I don't think he did that. McCain drove a few nails into the coffin of his presidential ambitions by sleeping through the speech.

But, it was still better than any Dems speech I've heard.....The Dems haven't said shit on what they'd do.......or....Is it do do ?

I think McCain drove the nail through the coffin when he started pandering to right wing fringe groups. He must have not noticed the huge support he had among liberals before then.

I didn't see the speech or the Dem followup. Question about the followup though? Who was the speaker? I remember the followup to one of Bush' speeches where the Dem, who came off quite effeminate, kept repeating "there's a better way" without ever explaining what that "way" was. That's when I started realizing all Bush' speeches will lead to useless comments.

You didn't see or listen to the speech, but you criticize it on post #14 ?

Sounds pretty lame assed to me !

No, he doesn't have to turn public opinion around. He's the Commander in Chief, and thus it really doesn't matter a whit what "public opinion" is on the matter. The President is NOT required to follow "public opinion".

The Democrats are impotent on this issue, UNLESS they are willing to step up to the plate and DEFUND the war effort.

And the Democrats are too cowardly (and too politically opportunistic and self-serving, despite all their chest-thumping rhetoric to the contrary) to do that.

President Bush has simply thumbed his nose at the chest-thumping Democrats.
