I think he deserves a B its good but not good enough. Yet we can go forward with confidence -- because the State of our Union is strong, our cause in the world is right, and tonight that cause goes on. God bless. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/relea...0070123-2.html |

To succeed last night he had to turn public opinion around on Iraq, and I don't think he did that. McCain drove a few nails into the coffin of his presidential ambitions by sleeping through the speech. Oh well back to the drawing board. |

While for the first time Bush actually went into some detail about why he feels the way he does about Iraq, it was too little too late. The majority of Americans already distrust him, and his efforts last night aren't really going to make much of a difference in this area.
As for his domestic agenda the insurance sceme is DOA. It has been suggested before and Congress has always been unwilling to mess with the middles classes insurance programs. Personally I think that the people who have to get their own insurance should be able to take a tax deduction equal to what those of us that get company sponsored programs get, but it shouldn't be the company sponsored programs that pay for it. I will hold final judgement until I see the fine print on the plan. No child left behind? He would actually have more credibility had he actually funded the program. Right now all I see is a federally unfunded mandate. I thought conservatives were against that. Energy. Didn't hear much new here except for the fact that there may be some movement on fuel economy standards. Personally I think making it a standard by class of vehicle rather than one for all vehicles makes more sense anyway, as long as the requirements are meaningfull. The one thing he did say that I was suprised at was refering to Global Climate Change. Now that is a long way from saying we are responsible for it, but taken in context with some of his other comments this is about as close as we will ever get him to admit that. |

The State of the Union Speech was very uninspiring. In grave times such as these (at least in our international relations and national security) we need a leader who will step up to the plate.
Bush dodged a ballsy approach to solving the Iraq War much like he dodged serving in the Vietnam War. This speech was his chance to convince the nation that he has it under control. That pretty much means that he's given it his "best shot" and come up with nothing. I expect nothing out of him except lost time for the remainder of his administration. He has no long term plan or solution. It's all too vague. Bush has had 6 years to do all the things he's proposing now as if he's just taking office. His speechwriters and advisors have concocted what seem like big positive issues to try and distract us from his (and now our) failure in Iraq. He gave us what amounts to a campaign speech midway through is second term as president. He seems pretty disconnected from the American people and pretty disconnected from reality. |

I just wish he would learn to pronounce "nuclear". Can't his advisers stress the importance of gravitas and dignity to him? What one thinks about pronunciation depends largely on his background. If I hear someone say "mature" without the "ch" sound in the middle I'm likely to think him snooty, but others probably consider a clean "t" sound more civilized, dignified if you will. |

He uses a recognized pronunciation of the word, though not the most dignified. |

Nice try but in 50 years and having traveled all over this country I have never heard anyone use the pronunciation nukular before for the word nuclear. It is a minor issue I agree but lets be honest. THis isn't a creek/crick or root beer/rut beer thing. This is a Bushism pure and simple. Definition of nuclear - Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Check out the second pronunciation. You can even click to hear an audio recording of it. It is a minor issue, but I am being honest. It's a recognized pronunciation, documented in the dictionary. |

Why wasnt bush talking about expanding private education so we can give parents a choice public education and private education? Plus why he didnt talk about fighting crime plus tougher sentencing on sexual preditors? We need 150,000 more police officers in major cities. |

Perhaps because private education is not the responsibility of the government? |
