ASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. aerial gunship has attacked suspected al Qaeda targets in southern Somalia, a senior Pentagon official said Monday.
The AC-130 flew its mission within the last 24 hours, the official told CNN. The operation was launched based on intelligence that al Qaeda operatives were in that location, but there was no immediate indication of how successful the strike had been. Additionally, the official said, the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has moved within striking distance of Somalia, but its jets have not been put to use. http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/africa...ike/index.html If the intel was good, then it's about time. Iraq has taken too much away from the search for AlQueda, IMHO. Matt |

At least there is finally an AC-130 overhead. Imagine - just imagine - how different the Battle of Mogadishu would have been with a Spectre overhead. not to turn political but that very incident makes me worry about a DEM president and policy making machine.............. had we the assets back then not only would less americans have died but the somali deaths would of been halved.............. |

I wonder how we can afford to do this? Money-wise we don't even put the war in our budget so it's obviously all on credit. Troop-wise the Generals have said we don't have enough troops to sustain anymore in Iraq, so do we have enough to attack Somalia too?
How many wars can we start all at once? Iraq was such a HUGE fuck up. If we weren't in Iraq fighting Iraqis instead of Al Qaeda in Africa and Afghanistan, we could have kicked the terrorist's asses by now. God I hate Bush for putting us in this shit place we are stuck in right now. |

Troop-wise the Generals have said we don't have enough troops to sustain anymore in Iraq, so do we have enough to attack Somalia too? And the troops we need in Iraq are Iraqis. Our success in Iraq is unprecidented in modern military history. Say thank you Mr. Bush. You owe him a big fat kiss Samantha. God I hate Bush for putting us in this shit place we are stuck in right now. |

It doesn't put our troops in harms way & it's extremely effective, with proper intelligence. But, if one single civilian was hit while eating dinner with the bad guys, here comes the media & probably you Samantha. |

I doubt it will take a whole day before we start hearing about how evil the US is for killing innocent Somalis during the attack. Somalia's government had struggled to survive since forming with backing from the United Nations two years ago, and was under attack by the Islamic militia when Ethiopia's military intervened on Dec. 24 and turned the tide. But many in predominantly Muslim Somalia resent the presence of troops from neighboring Ethiopia, which has a large Christian population. The countries fought two brutal wars, the last in 1977. On Sunday, gunmen attacked Ethiopian troops, witnesses said, sparking a firefight in the second straight day of violence in the capital, Mogadishu. U.S. Gunship Attacks al-Qaida in Somalia - AOL News “Second straight day of violence”??? When was the last time there wasn’t violence in Mogadishu for two days straight? |

this was surely not about al qaeda or the war on terror or any other bullshit reason. the US has been trying to stabilize somalia with OUR warlord dictators for years and the ICU is currently fucking that up. why do we wish to stabilize somalia? well, we want their oil of course. apparently they have huge potential reserves with US oil compnies waiting to survey and drill. and it doesn't hurt that somalia is strategically located close to the red sea, the gulf of aden, etc. i can't stand it when an act of corporate imperialism is looked upon by educated people as doing something "good" or to ensure the safety of the world. can't you guys see through the shit screen? |
