I heard them saying that on the news, "people were concerned, being that we're so close to 9/11 as to what it could have been.."

Never even entered my mind. My thought process went from "huge construction truck driving by" to "earthquake" pretty quickly.

I've gotta admit that, being in a building that was specifically targeted in a terror plot in the past, the thought of terrorism briefly entered my mind.

It was right after, "did someone just knock over a row of file cabinets?", and right before, "that had to be an earthquake - wow, cool, lived through my first earthquake".

On a more informative note, some general information on the seismic state of Virginia.

I grew up in upstate NY (Schenectady) and was shocked when I found out how seismically active the area was. From what I remember the area got dozens of quakes every year but most were very low magnitude.

Yea, if I had been in DC the thought may have crossed my mind. Only ever felt one other earthquake in this area and it's a pretty unique feeling and noise, so the memories came back pretty quick. This one was way bigger, though!

The strike failed, God almost wiped out the team but no matter what else everyone else tries to do to prevent it, the Skins are destined to take the field on the first Sunday of the season.

Speaking of God, looks like there was some damage to the National Cathedral.
(Reuters) - The Washington National Cathedral, the highest point in the capital, suffered damage in Tuesday's earthquake, with three spires in the central tower breaking off of the gothic-style building, a spokesman said.

Richard Weinberg, director of communications at the Episcopal cathedral, said the three pinnacles on the 30-story-high central tower had broken off and were lying in the grass.

To be expected, just often not immediately or only superficially visible with well built structures that ought to have minor issues at most. It's old, flimsy and/or dilapidated buildings that were more at risk and might have some internal damage not immediately recognisable but may be unsafe in the short or long term structural problems if not addressed. That means the ghetto areas of DC but more likely the old or run down buildings closer to the epicentre area.
