I have plenty of black friends who I think no less of, nor do I think they're chimps and not humans, because of this picture...
Of course, "some of my best friends are chimpanzees".

Pretty much... yes. It doesn't take someone particularly knowledgable about the history of racism in America to know that for more than two centuries the Klan and other racists have used imagery of black people presented as apes and monkeys to make the entire race seem somehow less than human. It's that history that makes it appear racist to this very day. In other words, when GWB was portrayed as a monkey it was commonly perceived as a slam against him alone... not all white people. When any black person, including president Obama, is portrayed as a monkey; it is commonly perceived as a slam against not only the president, but an entire race. Get it now?
I "get" what people are trying to make of it. I "get" the double standard. I "get" people are still looking under beds for racism. I get that people want to be offended to feel special, to get attention.

Meanwhile the liberal media ignores the hate spewing liberal lefties that have showed up at TEA party rallys spouting obscenities (even aimed at children) and hate in general. That way they can focus on this chimp story..........and on the birth certificate aspect of the joke email, what keeps Obama from producing it? If you were him and had one wouldn't you show it and serve up a huge mug of STFU? That is IF you had one.

And libs, is Bush still a chimp?
No, no I wouldn't.

a. they wouldn't accept it, they'd say IT was a forgery. If God himself came down and said, "this is my son, in whom I well pleased and who was born in Hawaii," they'd be saying how amazing it is that the Great Kenyan Cabal could even corrupt God

b. Fuck them...That certificate he's produced is good enough for every other person born in Hawaii and it's goddam Hawaiian State Law that's all you fucking get. If he did produce it they'd want to impeach him for illegally overriding his home state's prerogatives.

c. Fuch them again...to produce the Long Form would give them some legitimacy which they do not have. The ONLY REAL reason they're doing this to Obama alone (have you ever heard of it being done to any OTHER candiidate, like MCCAIN who really WASN"T born in the US or Barry Goldwater, who was born in Arizona before it became a State? )is that Obama is Black and they just CANNOT accept the fact that a black man is President

And finally, the really disgraceful thing is that this was produced by a MAJOR REPUBLICAN LEGISLATOR... Yeh...they're were a lot of pictures of Bush as a Chimp but I don't recall any of them being made by Rachel Pelosi.

Still, now you pubs have attacked anyone who wants to plan their family, are aiming at retirees and continue to insult and alienate blacks, way to go guys. Diebold can only do so much in extending the Republican "Revolution" hopefully.

When the kids did it to Bush, it was wrong, when the kids do it to Obama it's wrong. There was plenty of things to say about Bush based on his policies, there's plenty of things to say about Obama, based on his policies.

To make these monkey comparisons is just immature kids with nothing better to do with their lives.

Yes, absolutely true.

Except these kids exemplify the juvenile emotional quotient .. that's running America.

We the people need better, we deserve better .. and, we can do better.

I never approved of the Bush monkey stuff, though, and other forms of dehumanising and unfair characterisations of him, Obama, or other past POTUSes. The lack of respect in recent times for those who hold the Presidency has been appalling IMO.
Agreed.

And that lack of respect is especially egregious, and apparent daily, here at USPOL.

That it's allowed, heck I might even say encouraged, trickles down to every other corner of this site.

James Buchanan. IMO, he's the worst POTUS performance-wise the US ever had, or at least arguably so. I've made that argument several times. I've also argued that the "Sly Fox of the Kinderhook" was the worst though, so it would come down to one of the two for me.

Remember all the caricatures of GWB as a chimpanzee a few years ago?

Well, it appears that turnabout is simian play:

Orange County GOP Official Sends E-mail Saying Obama's Parents Were Monkeys

Yes indeed, it's political bananas time once again .. and, of course, with news ticklers every 15 minutes this evening, the media is certainly going ape over a chance to trash the GOP during the late nightly news.

With all the major problems we humans have to deal with during the carnage of the recession, this is what we get from our two political powers: Monkey Wars.

Phlegm at 11:00.

Apparently we've yet to sufficiently evolve left or right to where we can empower a political party to simply do its job for we the people.
The best reaction to have to this is the one President Obama will likely have and that will be that he will take it in stride and not be offended because all politicians and others in public life have to put up with this kind of childish behavior. It's supposed to be funny and insulting at the same time. Anyone who becomes president can expect to have something like this directed at him/her.

A monkey who lived a life of world travel, prep school, the Ivy League, acedemic fellowships, law practice, and federal elective office including a Senate seat and culminating with the Presidency of the United States.

It's funny that people would fixate on the slam instead of laughing their asses off at the irony.

"Barack Obama. He's not your gradfather's monkey!"

The problem isn't the behavior. It's who is doing it Again, I don't recall that any of the Bush as Chimp photos were done and circulated by ANY senior Democrat on ANY level

If if was bunch of high school kids, that's one thing, this is entirely something else.

Has the Republican Party come out and condemned this? No?? Well, then, it's being done by one of their elected officials, so they must SUPPORT it.

Yeh, take a good look, black people, here's what your new Republican "allies" REALLY think of you.

And, yeh, Obama won't say a word about this. He doesn't have to. Handled well, this could just win him the 2012 election.

This is absolutely disgusting. And yes, I feel this kind of thing should not be done to any President regardless of party affiliation. And yes, I protested this kind of thing against GB 1 & 2.The President of the United States of America is a position that deserves respect.

Disagree with their positions, criticize him, that is fine and dandy.

But this crap is absolutely disgusting.

I agree that it is the position; the office which should be respected.

The person filling that office, though, has to earn his respect. The man is not the office...

I dunno, Michael O' Donohughe and Dennis Miller can still give me a good laugh sometimes. Notice that whatever they do, however, they are careful to stick to the issues and don't become mean spirited. That IS the problem with most conservative "humor"...it has all the charm of making fun of people in wheelchairs cause they don't play good football.

Of course nothing compares to the conservatives themselves when they are trying to be serious.
