Default Government Shutdown? Be of good cheer!
If the government shuts down at midnight tonight due to the utter failure of Congress to get their shit together, don't fret.

Your Representatives and Senators, along with the President and VP will continue to get paid and receive all their perks.

So don't worry - even though the peasantry will suffer from losing their paychecks, our ruling class will be just fine.

Seriously, we need to change some things in DC. For starters - if the Federal government shuts down due to one of these budget spats, all Congressional pay is forfeit. Not deferred, lost. Same for the President and VP.

Similarly, all perks are forfeit. If a Congressmember, the President or the VP are out of town - they get flown back to DC and then the travel office closes until the government re-opens. If there is no money to pay our troops, then there is no money to drive Rep. Brown and her gal pals out for their shopping junket.

If the Congress and President are going to squabble like grade school children and make the country suffer for it, then they should be treated like grade school children. Spank them, cut off their allowance, and send them to bed without supper.

Amen!

I donīt have a dog in the fight personally, but it would seem a good suggestion to keep them focused on actually passing a budget and not making it a fight about all kinds of core value issues, like this has become.

My understanding is that soldiers in the field may be cut off. That seems highly unfair, to say the least. Congressmen can borrow from their hookers if they have to

Matt, sadly, we are a nation of apathetic sheep. We have a horrible economy, smothering in debt, our elected have sent our jobs abroad, yet the citizens of this nation will do nothing while our congress leaders fly home this evening on their govt jets while dining on filet mignon.......can I get another single malt over here?

Why, we can't rise up, the natn'l guard will shoot us with rubber bullets...ow!

Completely agree. It's the only profession I can think of where you can do your job so badly that your place of employment actually shuts down...and you still keep your job and paycheck.

Agreed! It's a circus, with no entertainment value whatsoever. Elephants, jackasses with plenty of monkeys.

Spoken like an angry peasant, try to see it from the vantage point of a rule maker....

Good point. I'll try to see it from Corinne Brown's viewpoint. Who cares if the rank and file government employees get paid, me and my girls are going shopping!

That's much better.

ahoy chassisman,

i haven't been ondeck as much as i'd like to...but 'o late i been too bloody busy sailin' the seas, risin' 'fore down to take to me vessel and only wanderin' back to port long after the sun be set.

when i've made me way back home, thar be grub to consume, family to speak with, hobbies to pursue...all under the umbrella 'o sleepyness from me days labors.

i don't really think americans be sheep, me friend. i think a great many in our land be just bone tired from our days labors, and hath not the energy to discrern which ways the wind be blowin' in washington.

from me distant perch afar, it seems like they be not locked in endless debate o'er monies, fer as the mighty Disillusioned_1 hath cited, .5% be a tiny amount. thar quarrel be o'er principle, aye mate?

the right believes that they must stand fast and hew to thar idears 'o cuttin' to a certain amount, fer they believe that our ultimate deliverance shall be comin' from fiscal discipline. the left be also diggin' in thar heels, fer they believe that the weakest in our land shall be shorn 'o care and protection should the blade the right wield chop too much from our government's spendin'.

i think 'tis alright that both parties be so steadfast in thar convictions, but 'tis unfortunate that the economy will suffer should we drop our sails and our bridge be unmanned.

imma okies dokies with congress and the white house still gettin' paid, since i've no doubt they'll still be continuein' workin' on thar duties.

Completely agree. Of course the members themselves would have to vote on this wouldn't they? Could something like this be done with an executive order?

They will not be cut off they'll simply have to wait for the checks.

No it can't be done by executive order. Congress has the power to adjust the pay of Congress not the President.

An executive finding condemning all congresspeople for taking pay while the gov shuts down might be somewhat effective.

I'll go even further: in the event of a shutdown, new elections for every member of Congress should take place immediately.

Including the President. I'd be all for that. We'd have a whole lot of people who might have to actually get a real job tomorrow, and we'd have a whole bunch more conservatives elected.

Against both parties. So somehow I don't imagine that's going to happen.

Including the President.
I sympathize, but technically, the President can't be blamed for a shutdown in a hypothetical scenario wherein a budget bill never even reaches him.
