Rep. Chris Lee (N.Y.) resigned Wednesday in the wake of allegations that the married Republican pursued a date with a woman on Craigslist and sent her a revealing photo of himself.

Lee’s resignation letter was read on the House floor, and he apologized for the scandal in a statement released by his office.

“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York,” Lee said in the statement. “I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.

“The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately,” he added.

The Gawker website published on Wednesday a series of e-mails purportedly between Lee and a woman he met on Craigslist to set up a date. Gawker also posted a photo that Lee had taken of himself shirtless.

Lee’s spokesman told Gawker that the lawmaker’s account had been hacked. “The only time he or his wife posted something online was to sell old furniture when they changed the apartment they keep in D.C.,” the spokesman told Gawker.

A spokesman for Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) declined to comment. “We don’t discuss conversations the Speaker has with Members,” spokesman Michael Steel said.

Lee’s resignation is the latest in a series of problems that have beset the new House GOP majority since it took control last month.

Which brings me back to me, and the point. Since I have been strumming the banjo here, government is doing more for less. The budget is balanced - first time since my sausage-mate, JFK, did a one gun salute to Marilyn, a fact the press didn't seem to notice, mostly because they weren't looking. Unemployment is so low today a blind felon can get ajob as a night-watchman. And, the stock market is higher than a D-student on a full gram of dummy-dust, and anyone with a degree from a junior college who can spell 'software' has enough money to ponder the annual maintenance cost of his boat, instead of where the next meal is coming from.
Bottom line: I'm running a government here, not a dating school, and I've done it with my pecker showing. What I'm asking for is your support, not a date with your daughter, unless, of course, she's a babe with thin ankles, and then I'd like to discuss it. In the meantime, think about where you are today, what kind of life you're living, and before you get too interested in which way my dong points, ask yourselves this question...

I just love how a conservative congressman resigns in disgrace and some of the conservative members of the Forum are trying to redirect the issue to liberals. I can just imagine what their response would have been if it had have been a Democratic congressman. I guess hypocrisy isn't restricted to members of Congress....

What the guy did was shameful, and he did the right thing by resigning. What else should we say? Should we say how, clearly, the Democratic party is the party of virtue and morality, and the Republican party should be abolished?

See, the difference between intelligent people and liberals is that we see an issue for what it is, and we move on. Liberals, on the other hand, pen manifestos bemoaning the failings of an entire party based on the actions of a single individual.

He ought to resign for just being stupid for using the Internet alone. It's common sense that the Internet was not designed for privacy no matter how many safeguards one places upon it. Heck, it was designed for the opposite purpose of privacy, namely linking people to the world. Yet, in divorce cases, I consistently see stray cat spouses opening an account on match.com and other dating sites, adultfriendfinder.com if they also like the 'swinging' lifestyle, etc. Then again, if the public representation is a phony one such as being a 'family values' person with any self-righteous streaks (I'm not sure how he presented himself on 'family values' issues as I have not researched him, although he is married) then it's a good thing that they get caught.

This guy isn't any different than thousands of other men and women except that he happens to have been a public figure. Pathetic? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. When Clinton got his BJ from Monica and I read the transcripts, she said Billy said, oh....it's been sooo long.
