Default Presidential name-squishing: disrespectful or dynamic?
I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but it seems like the conservative media's attitude, or the media's attitude in general, has been more disrespectful of President Obama's administration than previous administrations.

I say this primarily because it seems more common now to reference him by his last name alone, rather than the title President Obama, but also because of the name squishing. Back during campaign season, there was "Obamarama," then Obamanation, then Obamacare, now I'm watching Fox and they're flashing Obamanomics. Seriously? I don't know if his name is just easier to append than previous presidents, or if it's a symptom of the Twitter generation or what, but it's annoying.

And I'm not sure if this trend bothers me more because it gives conservatives a rapid-fire way to turn any discussion partisan, or if it is more disrespectful of Obama's policies and his office. And I can speculate on why that is, as I'm sure you all can. But, yeah. Thoughts?

Remember "Reaganomics?" The media did it to him, too. Oh, and "Bushisms/Bushspeak?" I do notice that the media does refer to Pres. Obama quite a bit by his last name only, sans title. That annoys me. Call me old fashioned, but we were taught to respect the office if not the man or the policies and that means using the title. Even more disrespectful is the way oridinary citizens butcher the President's name.

I do remember Bushisms, yes. lol But still, those tended to be things that the man actually said that were pretty wtf, rather than using a derogatory catchphrase to denounce his policies altogether. I don't remember Reagonomics so much (and I wondered if part of that was a generation gap or something lol) but was that actually used during his presidency? And even with those, it's not nearly as much as the name-squishing that's occurred during this administration; we're not even two years in, and I can come up with four off the top of my head, and there are probably lots more. We've still got two (or more, hopefully) years to go.

That's the other thing that gets me as well, is just the disrespect toward the office of President, no matter who is serving. Back when Bush was president, my mother got on my case if I didn't use his proper address, but now that a "liberal" is in office, screw that. Seems like just more conservative hypocrisy.

Yes, Reaganomics was the term used to describe his economic policies during his term. It was the catch phrase for "trickle-down" economics, which was itself a catch phrase for "supply-side."

As for your mother insisting that you use the proper address when describing Bush 43, maybe she just needed to be reminded that he actually WAS elected twice and actually WAS the leader of the free world.

I know I still have trouble believing it!
