Early on in Dreams, Obama tells of how his mother and Indonesian step-father, Lolo Soetoro, were pulled apart by a proxy version of the American dream. Lolo got a job with an American oil company, bought a house in a better neighborhood, and started dining at the company club. Obama’s mother, who had come to Indonesia in search of Third World authenticity, wanted nothing to do with the “ugly American” types who frequented this new world, and she taught her son to disdain them as well. From Obama’s perspective, American-inspired upward mobility had broken his new family in two.

There are a lot of perks to living in the city, if you're wealthy enough to live above the scum.

Also, I've known many single adults or couples who have raved about city life. Until they had children.

An adult who has their values set in place can weather the storm. A child has almost no chance in that environment.

It seems to me, in the last decade or so, that the focus changed from trying to get Suburbia to move back to the city, to finding a way to insert scum into the suburbs.

I worked on a government subsidized project to convert a very old factory into an apartment building last year. They had luxury apartments up top, and section 8 housing down below. "Mixed housing", or whatever they call it.

Community planning.

A builder goes to the zoning board, he wants to build a bunch of nice homes. But the community planners have a different idea. They want him to go ahead and build the McMansions over here, but right over here, they'd like him to put in some low-cost townhomes which will inevitably be purchased by slum lords who live in gated communities far away, and rented out to spics, niggers, and white trash...

The expensive homes don't sell. Most of them are never even built. Who wants to drop $350,000 on a new home and have a bunch of riffraff living 200 yards away? It makes no damned sense.
