Why?
because they saw profit in land jumping kansas. then, when that failed, they robbed Missourians instead.

“Take long walks in stormy weather or through deep snows in the fields and woods, if you would keep your spirits up. Deal with brute nature. Be cold and hungry and weary.”

“The whole course of human history may depend on a change of heart in a single, solitary, even humble individual. For it is within the soul of the individual that the battle between good and evil is waged and ultimately won or lost.”

“Books can only reveal us to ourselves, and as often as they do us this service we lay them aside.”

Something about his words make me want to do better and be better.

An inspiring writer and philosopher.

Emerson was another great one.

the entire radical republican structure was a grouping to derail the missouri compramise. that self determination should choose its own destiny concerning slavery. so all the horse theives from ohio, and some of their " investors " from NY and MS decided to jump the land. that failed. they were killing eachother off. so they stopped. then, they hit Missouri itself. Lawrence was the only half fortified town they could base from. thanks to Anderson, Todd, and Quantrill, that was remedied in '63.

What was the purpose of bankrolling Brown, then?

Not read much of Emerson. I have a book of his essays though.

Kind of a late starter with philosophy - thought it was all a bit above me intellectually speaking!

Nietzsche is the crown jewel of philosophers, in my opinion. Hard to read, hard to understand, but a mind like no other.

In Twilight of the Idols, Nietzsche sytematically refuted nearly every philosopher who came before him. Except Emerson. He loved Emerson. In this scathing book, he takes a few moments to praise Emerson. It's sort of humorous. You imagine this guy screaming from the pulpit, and then he suddenly digresses and blushingly pays homage to Emerson, and then it's back to the ranting!

Guessing he might be over my head! Sounds interesting though.

Beyond Good and Evil is free to download from Amazon so will have to add it to my reading list. Time to cut back on reading fluff and read something improving. I wish I could understand all the things I want to!

Just keep reading...

With Nietzsche, I just keep re-reading and banging my head against the table until it starts to make sense...
