Default Government Prizes.
What if there is a technology that could be invented, that would improve our lives dramatically, but wouldn't necessarily be profitable, or worth the risk?

This is where government could actually be effective, not by picking winners and losers, but simply by allocating an obscene amount of prize money for certain things.

Like a cure for cancer, or vehicles that run on renewable energy, or spaceships that can carry people to Mars, etc and etc...

Make the prize obscene, like $10 billion or something, but then have the stipulation that there be no patent, that the info be owned by all, so that businessmen could then find the most efficient form of delivery of that product. Or, if it's something you could do yourself, everybody could do it for themselves.

Freedom naturally rewards people for their efforts, and without government corruption.

Yeah, if it improves our lives dramatically, we'll pay for it.
Fuck, people bought flat screens, which they didn't really need, when they cost thousands.
I don't think your scenerio is valid.

Well, think about it. Let's imagine that somebody figured out that eating tons of celery cured cancer. Well, there's no money in that, but there is a lot of money in treating cancer symptoms.

This would potentially solve that little quirk.

And remember, my point is that if we're going to spend public money on it, let's spend it on results.

The free market will reward innovation, your premise is flawed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OBVIOUSLY NO ONE WOULD PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT
IMPROVED THEIR LIVES... CERTAINLY NO ONE WOULD BE INTERESTED
IN A CANCER CURE.....
SO WE MUST SET UP A TYRANNY TO TAX AWAY PEOPLES'
INCOME TO PAY AN ARMY OF PISSANTS TO RAM THESE
GOOD THINGS UP THEIR ASSES.
Your cynicism should extend beyond government. Big business is probably more powerful, and more harmful, at this point.
It amazes me that some people believe that the pharmaceutical industry would welcome cheap cures for diseases, or that fossil fuel providers would welcome affordable renewable energy. So on and so forth.
Corporations exist to make profit, not to do good.
Business alone, can do little, other than meet demands.
It's when the government forces laws on people, requiring, or stopping, businesses from meeting that demand, or when the government FORCES a demand (as in solar/wind).
When businesses pay politicians to pass laws, creating false demands (like regulations), we have trouble.
We're not talking about all businesses. That's an important point. We're talking about the gigantic corporations that are able to manipulate the world to their will.
True.
But a business that GROWS.....can reach that point yes?
When did wal mart stop being the mom and pop 5cent store, and become what it is today?
IMO, once a business or corp, gets to a certain point......the government tends to pass regulations ABOUT it, or for it, or against it somehow.
Meanwhile, the mom and pop businesses, can only be harmed by the regulations.
Really? I'm sure a family owned, "Made in the USA" business in America that was put out of business by a transnational corp using communist labor would love a tariff...
THE MOST INTRACTABLEY AND CONSISTENTLY CORRUPT
AND SELF-SERVING ENTITY ON EARTH IS GOVERNMENT.
THAT'S BEEN A FACT OF LIFE FOR SEVERAL THOUSAND YEARS...
WITH BUT RARE EXCEPTION.
THE GENIUS OF AMERICA AS FOUNDED WAS THE
LEGALLY RESTRICTED AND LIMITED SCOPE OF GOVERNEMNT...
ESPECIALLY AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL.
