Default The War On Terror, An Epic Failure
"No nation has ever benefited from a prolonged war." - Sun Tzu

Has there ever been a greater and more complete failure than the U.S.'s global war on terror? You might be hard-pressed to find one.

Until it's all said and done, the monetary cost alone will likely exceed $5 trillion. And that's not even including the cost to rebuild and replace all of the military resources we have spent. Further, this was all put on the credit card, plunging America into greater debt, weakening our currency and harming our credit rating. And all the while, nations like China and India have been focusing on economic competition with us, and they seem to be winning.

Have we won the hearts and minds of the people of the Middle East? Doesn't look like it. The Iraqis tossed us out of their country, and we are engaged or about to engage in peace negotiations with the Taliban in Afghanistan. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The Arab Spring has seen radical Muslims take control of nation after nation in the region, sometimes with our backing! Syria appears to be the next domino to fall, and there is talk of the US arming the rebels there. Rebel forces which we know include a large number of Al Qaeda operatives. Let's not forget Iran, which may promise to be the final resting place of the empire, should we choose to invade.

Here in the States, we've sacrificed an obscene number of our liberties, and even our morality, in order to feel secure from terrorists who may or may not exist. Everyone glosses over the fact that Homeland Security, the FBI, and the TSA have never really stopped a credible threat in the years since 9/11. Sure they've made arrests, but only after setting up their own false terror network and recruiting the mentally ill and disenfranchised, using our own actions in the Middle East as the primary recruiting propaganda!!!

Any student of political and military history knows that this is a recipe for disaster. The USA is quickly approaching "event horizon".

Great nations die from the inside out. Once the people have lost their moral code, once liberties have been revoked, once economic prosperity isn't attainable based on merit, the nation quickly becomes a husk, dead on the inside, and it is only a matter of time until the whole thing crashes to the ground...

You're an idiot, Jes. We did not start the "war on terror". We did not cause radical muslims to hate everyone who does not believe as they do. The US has done more good for the people of the mid east and the entire world than all of the other countries combined.

Your blame-america bullshit is a symptom of an arrogant, uneducated, progressive movement. You would be a favorite son of Karl Marx and Mao.

Punish success, reward failure, take from those who earned it and give to those who have not, kowtow to those who attempt to kill us.

Those who think as you do are who is bring the US to its knees. But you will not succeed, there are still enough real american patriots who will step up and save the country from following the lead of europe and its failed socialism.

You claim to support Ron Paul and then you post a bullshit piece or marxist propaganda like the OP in this thread. What the hell are you really?

Keep tilting at windmills, gentlemen, but I'm done wasting my time with you. You can argue amongst yourselves.

Next year we are to bring the soldiers home
For lack of money, and it is all right.
Places they guarded, or kept orderly,
Must guard themselves, and keep themselves orderly.
We want the money for ourselves at home
Instead of working. And this is all right.

It's hard to say who wanted it to happen,
But now it's been decided nobody minds.
The places are a long way off, not here,
Which is all right, and from what we hear
The soldiers there only made trouble happen.
Next year we shall be easier in our minds,

Next year we shall be living in a country
That brought its soldiers home for lack of money.
The statues will be standing in the same
Tree-muffled squares, and look nearly the same.
Our children will not know it's a different country.
All we can hope to leave them now is money.

Look Jes, I think all of us agree that the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Viet Nam, and Kosovo were stupid and a waste of money and american lives. We seem unable to learn from past mistakes, but lets not condemn the entire country for the mistakes of a few presidents and congressmen. And lets not pretend that we caused 9/11 or that we caused radical islam to preach that we should be killed.

There are real dangers in the world and there are many who would destroy us because of who we are. To let our guard down because of previous mistakes would be inviting disaster.

Whatever the motives (read 'personal advantage') for the prosecution of the WOT, it's simply beyond denial that the actions of the parties some say were irrelevant, were the very foundation for it's justification. Go figure, eh?

There are timelines. Given the sheer international scope of so momentous an undertaking, it is not to be wondered at that it comes at great expense. If inaccurate, then perhaps the naysayers would care to conjecture, as to just what interval should be required, to resolve the problems? Failing that, they should make admission of their own vested interests, and enjoy the credibility they claim (that being based on something much less than the nobility they affect).

Should cost trump national security? The safety of one's own people? If so, then what is the cost of one single safe and secure fellow citizen? This is pertinent, since to render such a price tag is to state for the record that at a certain point, threat to life and limb is acceptable. That beyond a certain dollar deposit, dead citizens are an afterthought.

And so we have time and cost. Where one seeks to repudiate the WOT, these factors must be addressed. In terms not only of scale, but moral barometer. Where these go unaddressed in any discussion, we're not dealing with the common good, but self interest only.

I am of the belief that the ends do indeed sometimes justify the means. Because those ends equate with liberty. But I speak for myself only.

Btw, Jes. The OP was fraught with leading language, gross extrapolation and ideological relativism. It came over as the cry of a drowning man, making a last-ditch plea for support. No, I'm not trolling you. But you've taken this about as far as it can go, without once and for all acknowledging both the situation, and the present need.

I absolutely agree that the War on Terror is a failure. The government is so paranoid that terrorists are coming to get us, that they are sacrificing our liberties and freedoms to make sure we stay in line. That's not how America is supposed to be.

As for the War on Drugs, the only way you could consider that a failure is because we're not doing enough to wage it. If we enforced our laws to the letter like we're supposed to, I truly believe drug use/trafficking/etc. would be next to nothing. Instead, Obama just sits back while millions of Americans turn themselves on to marijuana through services selling it like the snake oil it is, kids everywhere are using synthetic poisons that are somehow legal, and our liberal media glamourizes and praises drug use through every entertainment outlet. It's sickening.

In short, end the War on Terror and work harder on the War on Drugs.
