Default Tea Party candidate: Nazis 'Were Doing What They Thought Was Right'
This is a Tea Party-backed, Republican candidate for Congress. But this one likes to dress in SS military uniforms and re-enact the battles of World War II, fighting as a Nazi.

Ohio Congressional candidate Rich Iott got grilled by Anderson Cooper last night on his rather unusual hobby of dressing up as a member of the 5th SS Wiking Panzer Division, a unit in the German army during World War II.

Iott defended the members of the unit, who he said "wanted to fight what they saw as a bigger threat to them than Germany," so they joined up with the Nazis to fight the eastern front of the war against Soviet forces. "I don't think we can sit here and judge that today. We weren't there the time they made those decisions," he said.

Iott called "what happened in Germany during the second World War one of "the low points in human history," but defended the Wiking Division when Cooper referred to them as collaborators: "I don't know that I would put that label on them. They were doing what they thought was right for their country. And they were going out and fighting what they thought was a bigger, you know, a bigger evil."

Iott also contended that "this particular unit was one that was never charged with war crimes," though Cooper pointed out that one member was recently charged with the murder of 58 Jews. Iott replied: "The war on the eastern front was extremely brutal on both sides. Nobody was lily-white, that's for sure. Horrible things that happened on both sides."

Cooper also asked about the reenators' website, which he said describes members of the Wiking unit as "valiant men." He asked Iott if he believed these were "valiant men."
"I think that they thought they were fighting for their homeland," Iott said.

I have this theory: there really are a lot of crazy ass people in America. All of a sudden, there are a bunch of crazy ass people winning primaries and running for high national and state office. Now, I'm now quite sure how that all happened, but I think that Facebook and Twitter had something to do with it. I really do. And here we are. Crazy ass people are going to vote for crazy ass candidates. I mean, honestly crazy people. Some of them are going to get elected. To Congress.

If this isn't a huge wake-up call to mainstream politicians and voters who aren't crazy, I don't what else could be. And then there's all that money. These groups headed by Rove, by the Chamber, by the Koch's? I don't know what the hell is going on there, but whatever it is, it's not in the interest of anyone who isn't in that 1% who own the wealth and power in this country. That's a given. Y'all think it's bad now, just wait until those people get power. What are they going to do with a Sharron Angle or a Rand Paul or heaven help us all, Sarah Palin?

All I'll say is the Nazis did think what they were doing was right. Who truly does what they think is wrong? The problem is they thought mass murder was acceptable? Whether the group Iott is defending or the Nazis in general, that should have been unfathomable.

One would hope that this alone would prevent Iott from winning, but I'm sad to say I agree with DES, and a LOT of true nut jobs are going to get elected this year.

In Delaware, nut job Christine O'Donnell's ad campaign goes something like this: she comes on and say something like "I'm not a witch. I won't raise your taxes. I'm YOU."

Um, not, you're not me, or any other rational person, Christine. You're probably not a witch, but you'll likely raise our taxes in some form, you won't understand the issues sufficiently to be effective, and so you'll be co-opted by people much smarter, more experienced, and better-connected than you are. And you won't even see it coming.

I already did.
