Kanchipuram - Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple (Hastigiri)
Kanchipuram is one of the seven holy cities and a major religious centre for saivites and vaisnavites..
Temple Legend
The deity is believed to be worshipped by Lord Brahma in Krita Yuga, Gajendra in Treta Yuga, Brihaspati in Dvapara Yuga and Ananta Sesha in Kali Yuga.
Ramanuja's association with the temple
Ramanuja served in this temple before moving to Sri Rangam. Kanchipurna (Ramanuja's mentor) used to perform fanning service to Lord Varada and the The Lord would speak to Kanchipurna during fanning. Through Kanchipurna, Lord Varadaraja
cleared Ramanuja's doubts on Sri vaisnavism and instructed him to accept Mahapurna as his guru.
From Lord Varadaraja, Ramanuja took his sanyasa and received the title Yatiraja (king of ascetics).
Temple Specialities
a) Once in every 40 years the wooden deity Atthi Varada which is submerged in the temple pond, is retrieved and worshipped oppulently for 48 days.
b) Spiced Kanchipuram idli is a special prasadam of this temple.
c) A shrine housing a gold and silver lizards
