I haven't talked to her in months. How would that do me any good? I will never get anyone if I followed this advice and just waited for them to come to me.

It's specific advice for the situation you described, not all relationships. Plenty of fish in the sea, no need to obsess about one that already bounced back to an ex without maintaining any sort of contact for months.
