I personally prefer to give only to specific efforts. I have few funds and my parish is small and needs my support. Frankly, I've always been a bit uncomfortable with giving to charities (as opposed to a specific charitable mission).

Even some of the best reputed charities in the world have been caught with their financial pants down recently (9-11, Katrina). I once heard the President of the Red Cross for the San Diego region interviewed on the radio. He admitted to receiving a salary of over $400,000. As far as I'm concerned that's criminal.
