If we are doomed, then how exactly so? What is going to happen to us? If an event like this did happen before, then it would have been more credible. But not everything has been going as predicted. We can't even predict the weather to a degree of 100% certainty, so how is this certain at all?

The chances are likely to be among the lines of 1 out of >1x10^20 etcetera.

The Y2K bug was just the conspiracy that depicted the computers would fail at the new millenia due to its limit of '99' (01/01/99 was the furthest and 01/01/00 was next, which was thought to have caused a total reset of the computer calender). Luckily, the computers continued with 01/01/00 and did not reset.
