I don't think it is just a question about Thai people.
If you go to Spain, Italy or Greece in the summer season, very few of the locals wear sunglasses.
Its mostly tourists who wear them. Its almost part of the holiday uniform.
And interestingly enough, I have noticed Thai people wear them while they themselves are tourists around places like Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi.
