I have lived in Japan for the past 9 years now and while there is quite a large number of suicides, I haven't heard of any spurned lovers seriously threatening it. Sure the occassional ,"I want to die", but no serious threats.
More commom is the salaryman jumping in front of a train after being laid off, or as they say here, "restructured". This is done for two reasons, one to escape the shame of being unemployed,(often the man leaves the house in his suit as normal for weeks after being fired, instead of telling his family.) The second reason is so that his family can collect his life insurance.
Another, and recently increasingly popular (if you believe the media) form is young people meeting on suicide related sites and then meeting up and commtting mass-suicide. This often happens late autumn in a very famous forrest. The bodies are not found until the next spring.
