Express way and saving beaches
Its a widely believed that the newyl proposed 6-lane 7.5 km elevated expressway
along
the beach
from Marina to ECR ,will forever rob the beach of its myriad uses for humans and
wildlife
.The Rs. 1000 crore proposal envisages a high-speed expressway linking Marina beach to Elliot’s Beach in the first phase, and Elliot’s beach to ECR in Kottivakkam, in the
second
phase. Running through at least 8 fishing villages, the Road will displace 1000s of people, and severely disrupt fishing activities along
the coast
is also going to wash away
Elliots beach’s beauty, charm and prominence. Moreover, Chennai’s beaches also boast immense ecological significance as the nesting grounds for the Olive Ridley Turtle, a species that is to be treated at par with the Tiger as per the Indian Wildlife Act, 1972 which will also become endangered with the coming in of this elevated expressway.
When this message was taken to people, their hearts ripped apart. A day long fast organised by the Save Chennai Beaches Campaign and
Reclaim
Our Beaches (ROB), a youth-run collective, involved the
participation of
nearly 200 people who were against this proposal.
Though the protest was specifically aimed against the proposed Beach Expressway that is to run through all four of the city's four famed beaches, this was also a means to state people’s disappointment about the development-centric Coastal
Regulation
Zone
notification
2011.
Take this message further and stop the coming in of the elevated expressway. You can do your bit to save the coast.
