Most of my OBEs and lucid dreams have also been induced after 5 or 6 hours of sleep. Sometimes I've gotten up for a wake-up session and sometimes I've been too lazy. (Be warned, you may have trouble getting back to sleep if you do this). Occasionally, a dog barking or something along these lines has woken me and I've taken advantage of the situation.

Using affirmations, binaural beats or a timer such as the saltcube timer after waking up can definitely make things interesting. Keeping the mind clear of thought works really well. In my experience, the quality of the experience is much better if you've been practising awareness during your day.
