I gave this method a try Wednesday morning and again this morning.
Wednesday morning I did not get an OBE or lucid dream, but I did have a dream that I was able to remember parts of (I usually don't remember my dreams well, unless I'm keeping a dream journal and putting a great deal of effort into it).
This morning I completely failed to get back to sleep at all.
Part of my problem is that I don't get to sleep very easily unless I'm completely exhausted. Even when my insomnia isn't really bad, it still typically takes me at least 20 minutes or so to get to sleep. And that's assuming I'm not thinking about anything; repeating something like "When my body falls asleep I will leave my body" in my mind pretty much keeps me awake unless I'm mentally tired enough to lose the train of thought (which is how I fell back to sleep on Wednesday).
On top of that, the snooze button on my alarm only gives me 9 minutes before the alarm goes off again. Falling asleep in under 9 minutes is pretty rare for me, and the alarm tends to startle me to the point of getting my heart racing (which, of course, makes it harder to get to sleep).
On the other hand, becoming mentally awake is much easier for me than falling back to sleep. So, tomorrow I will just set my alarm for early in the morning and then try to OBE or lucid dream without getting out of bed first.
