Wolverine was never my favourite X-Men character, so I don't mind at all. Besides, he was introduced later, wasn't he? If I remember right he came around in the 70's whereas the X-Men started off in the 60's.
Even though that's true, the 60s X-men never sold really all that well, and even had a time of only reprints, and I can see why, reading them every once in a while. Some of the stories are just outright bad and inconsistent. Especially Cyclops and Xavier seemed like flat characters. The whole Cyclops - Marvel Girl - Beast - Iceman - Angel team is a heavy theme in later stories, which makes it all the more romantic. I remember being disappointed reading the Mimic story arc for example, since he was factually the sixth X-man (for like one minute).

I think X-men really rose to fame with the overhaul of the team after the reruns and ditching many of the old X-men (that is Havok, Polaris, Angel, Iceman and Marvel Girl [partially], since Cyke did continue and Beast was busy elsewhere) and plunging into the Phoenix Saga with the new team.

Edit: And coming to my point, sadly Wolverine was part of that fame as well, the only -barely- existing character of the new X-men along with Banshee, but why the overusage??? He was always part of nearly every team, not to mention his own series, he is always everywhere at once. I really have grown to dislike him.
