From this point on we have a no dogs on the beds rule.
We used to let our dog sleep with us when she was a pup, but it finally had to stop as she got older/bigger. She would strech out between us long ways and litterally push us to the edge of the bed. I finally said enough is enough, I was sick and tired or waking up with a back ache and I went out and got her her own bed and she now sleeps in her own bed on the floor in our room. She has been doing that for the last 3 and a half years no problem. However sleeping on the bed I don't think that is a habit I will start with any of my future dogs, I personally like having the bed as a dog free zone. So from now on with any of my dogs I have my bed they have their dog beds. Now as far as the couches and chairs and what not, I don't care. It's the dogs home too so why not. And she knows if we tell her to get down, she is to get down.
I really don't think allowing the dog on the furniture causing any kind of dominance issue. The issue is when you tell the dog to get down or try to move the dog and they growl/snap/refuse to do as told. That is when you have a an issue and that is a much deeper issue that doesn't stem from letting your dog on the furniture. But an issue that needs to be addressed by a trainer. I think another member mentioned "Resource guarding" and that is pretty much what that behavior would be.
