Now, I heard that you can still benefit from splitting up. But, that may pertain to general health. There's a big difference between how much you need to exercise to stay healthy, and how much you need to lose weight. Like J said, I also heard that you don't start burning fat for about 20-min, so you're getting the most benefit after that amount of time.
