ACL is a common injury but there are dozens of things that can go wrong and cause pain in the knees.
I recently hurt both my knees on the treadmill. here is how I injured myself
1) poor fitting shoes
2) pushing myself 2 hard when I was clearly way way out of shape.
3) overwright and causing higher impact
4) weak muscles that werent able to support the knee properly.
not necesarily in that order.
I havent had the doctor look at my knees yet, because I dont have insurance, but ive been crosstraining with very low impact cardio machines and I think they are geting better. But like yours their is dull to sharp pain all day, although not constant.
You wont knwo for sure what you did to your knee without seeing a doctor, but its likely you over-stressed one or more of several tendons, or have some form of arthritis forming.
I recomend checking out runners world website for more info on injury prevention and self treatment.
I can't wait till my knees get healed up because I wan't to run!
