Hi Beetledriver2
Firstly every one is different so you have to match your exercise to your capabilities. I'm no expert on this but my Doc advised me to do 30 mins a day of an aerobic exercise that raises your heart and respiration rate but not so much that you cannot hold a normal conversation.
The best guide is "Target Heart Rate" To find this you first need to calcutate your max heart rate which is simple at 220 bpm minus your age.
So for me at 52 my max heart rate is 168 bpm. The target rate is then a percentage of this 50%-60% is enough to exercise your heart. 60%-70%is enough to help weight loss 70%-80% is an aerobic workout 80%-90%is an anaerobic workout 90% > is asking for trouble
Obviously you need some means of monitoring your pulse rate but it seems a safe way to go about it. I am ticking along at the second level and I am really beginning to feel the benefit after a couple of weeks.
I hope this helps.
Steve
