I think that many women have a misconception of what is considered a "heavy" weight. 10 and even 12 pound weights are still considered "light", and you will most likely not "bulk" up from using them. Female body-builders use much heavier weights.

I use 5, 8 and 10 pound weights. I have one 20 pound dumbbell for specific exercises (French press, lats). I still can't do a "guys" push-up, but I think the "girls" way is effective, too.
