It will speed up your weight loss. The only way it will counter-act it is if you weight train and gain muscle. Muscles weighs more than fat, but is smaller.

If you gain 5 pounds of muscle and lose 5 pounds of fat, you will weigh the same, but be thinner and firmer - which is what you want. As an added plus, that 5 pounds of muscle will burn an additional 200 calories per day (40 calories per pound of muscle), without you doing anything at all.

Cardio will strengthen your heart and burn fat.
