Recommend Gary Taubes, "Good Calories, Bad Calories" for a comprehensive look at the dangers of simple carbohydrates (sugars/refined grains). They are implicated in a whole range of what he calls "diseases of civilization" including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimers. It's meticulously researched and, sometimes, a little over my head, but still a great read. It's quite interesting that societies in remote areas that continue to live on their traditional diets rarely suffer from any of this, including cancer. Taube quotes doctors in Africa from early in the 20th century who never saw a case of cancer despite spending many years treating the local population.
That said, I don't think an occasional bread stick is going to kill anyone. I ate them occasionally in P2 with no problem. However, I gave up fruit and that really kick started my weight loss. In any event, I'll probably never go back to regular consumption of wheat or refined sugar. I can get my bread fix using some of the pretty decent replacements we have these days including almond and coconut flour.
