My sister is a smoker and she said that it's difficult to gradually quit smoking because it's also for the health. Some people go experience nausea, headache, and sudden cough and colds. Just like drug addiction, you have to go though the rehabilitation and you cannot cut it down right away.

There are many things that you can do to help you stop smoking. You can change your eating and drinking habits. Drink a lot of water, eat fresh fruits and be aware of 'pleasure drinks' like coffee, tea and alcohol to stop your craving. You can also determine what makes you smoke. As for my sister, she gets comfort from smoking and it helps her go to sleep. So she is trying to divert her attention to other alternatives that can help her sleep fast. Sometimes she adds a little a teaspoon of gin or vodka on her fruit juice which makes her fall deep asleep. She also do some exercises before going to bed and it also puts her to sleep. What I am trying to say is that look for healthy options to quit smoking. There is always a way and if you are determined to quit it.
