Fblair, as Tril said, keeping your blood sugars under the tightest control is exactly what I would focus on if I were diagnosed with diabetes. As long as you do that, you aren't accumulating the bad effects of diabetes. It doesn't mean you don't have diabetes, it means you are effectively staving off it's progression.

You could try Atkins **as long as you have no evidence of kidney damage**. Alternately, you could try South Beach, which is a controlled carb diet (vs Atkins low carb). SB is also very similar to the mediterranean diet, which is highly recommended by cardiologists.

Hope this helps. It's very confusing trying to put a lot of this information together, but I'm glad you're making the effort. It will pay off!
