Vanessa... are they local tomatoes? California is on the list of states that are ok to eat tomatoes from:

"FDA recommends consuming raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw round red tomatoes grown and harvested only from the following areas that HAVE NOT BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE OUTBREAK:

Alabama
Arkansas
California..."

Call the store you bought them at and ask where they got these tomatoes. They may say to bring them back and they will refund your $ or trade you for other ones.

It also depends on the type of tomato you have... if it's any of these, you're ok:

cherry tomatoes
grape tomatoes
tomatoes sold with the vine still attached
tomatoes grown at home

It's only the plum, roma and round red ones (no vine attached) that you have to watch out for.

Cheri... washing them WILL NOT remove salmonella. It's IN the tomato. You have to cook it to kill the bacteria.
